Sebastiane KV1009BR Remastered Edition [Blu-ray] – Derek Jarman Drama

For viewers drawn to Derek Jarman’s cinema and landmark LGBT films, Sebastiane offers a distinctive Roman-era drama. Its story follows a soldier exiled to a remote Sardinian outpost. The HD remaster brings this edition to Blu-ray. The film runs for 1 hour and 25 minutes, making it a focused feature-length choice.

Worth noting

Stripped of rank and sent away from his fellow soldiers, Sebastian becomes the focus of his commanding officer Maximus’ desire. At the same time, Sebastian turns towards mystical and religious longings. That tension between power, sexuality and faith shapes the film’s drama, leading towards a stark story of death and martyrdom. The setting and subject matter give it a different emphasis from a conventional Roman-era story centred on military action.

Sebastiane is recognised as a pioneering work of modern LGBT cinema and an important film in British independent filmmaking. This remastered edition presents it in HD on Blu-ray, while the listed language is Latin. Viewers have praised the striking cinematography and image presentation, particularly the composed photography and long visual passages. Reactions to the story and its originality are more divided, reflecting the film’s unconventional approach.

Who it’s for

This edition suits viewers exploring Derek Jarman’s filmography, LGBT cinema, or dramas that place religious imagery and desire at the centre of the story. It offers a more visually and psychologically focused experience than a battle-led historical film, with the remote outpost providing a close setting for the tension between Sebastian and Maximus. The subject matter is deliberately sensual, so the film is best chosen by viewers comfortable with erotic themes as part of its drama.

It’s a good fit if you want a physical Blu-ray edition of a notable independent film rather than a broad, action-driven historical spectacle. Its compact runtime also makes it straightforward to set aside an evening for the complete story without committing to a multi-part series.

Getting the most from it

Set aside the full 1 hour and 25 minutes to follow the shift from Sebastian’s exile and his relationship with the soldiers around him to his private spiritual path. The film’s visual storytelling is an important part of its character, a focused viewing makes room for its carefully composed images as well as the conflict in the plot. The HD remaster gives this edition a clear visual reason to revisit the film on disc.

The format is Blu-ray, NTSC. Check that your playback setup supports Blu-ray discs in this format before watching. With Latin listed as the language, the edition is particularly suited to viewers seeking the film in that presentation.

Buying verdict

Sebastiane KV1009BR brings Derek Jarman’s provocative, visually distinctive drama to Blu-ray in an HD remaster. Choose it for the combination of a landmark LGBT film, a concentrated Roman-era story and striking cinematography—not for a conventional action-focused epic. It’s a considered pick for collectors of independent cinema and viewers interested in the film’s entwined themes of desire, faith and exile.
