Logitech wireless gaming mouse G309

A mouse cable can snag or clutter a compact gaming setup, while swapping between devices can make wireless controls less convenient. The Logitech G309 addresses both concerns with LIGHTSPEED wireless and Bluetooth, plus an AA-powered option for play without a POWERPLAY charging system.

Its appeal depends on which setup you want: it weighs 86 g with the included AA battery, or 68 g without a battery when used with POWERPLAY. Those are different configurations, not two weights you can switch between without changing the power setup.

Technical details

The G309 uses Logitech’s HERO 25K sensor, which the product details describe as tracking to the sub-micron without smoothing. Its LIGHTFORCE optical-mechanical switches combine optical actuation with a mechanical feel. Up to six buttons can be programmed for gameplay or shortcuts, so there is room to assign controls without moving to a mouse with a larger button layout.

For power, the stated battery life is 300+ hours with the included AA battery. POWERPLAY is described as providing unlimited battery life, but it is a separate setup requirement and is not listed among the box contents. The package includes the mouse, LIGHTSPEED receiver, receiver extender cable, AA battery, grip tape and user documentation.

What it works with

The listing identifies PC and Mac compatibility and offers both LIGHTSPEED and Bluetooth connectivity. That gives you a choice between the included receiver-based connection and Bluetooth, depending on how you want to connect. POWERPLAY is relevant only if you want the battery-free, 68 g configuration and wireless charging, the supplied AA battery provides the alternative.

For example, you could connect the receiver to a PC and use the extender cable to position it nearer the mouse, then assign one of the programmable buttons to a game shortcut. If your priority is simply a basic wired mouse, this wireless setup may offer more features than you need. The details do not specify further platform or software requirements, so don’t assume support beyond PC and Mac.

Usage tips

Choose the power arrangement before deciding which listed weight matters to you. With the AA battery fitted, the mouse is 86 g, the 68 g figure applies when using POWERPLAY without a battery. If you plan to use LIGHTSPEED, keep the receiver and extender cable accessible, and use the included grip tape if extra surface grip suits your handling. Bluetooth is another listed connection option, though the product details do not explain how to switch modes.

It suits you if wireless gaming, programmable controls and a choice of connection matter more than having a cable-free setup with no charging considerations. It may not suit you if you specifically want the lower listed weight but don’t have POWERPLAY, or if you need more than six buttons. Based on the listed details, the clearest trade-off is between carrying the AA battery and relying on the POWERPLAY setup.

Buying questions

Does it need POWERPLAY to work? No. The listed package includes an AA battery, and the product details give 300+ hours of battery life for that setup.

Can it connect without the LIGHTSPEED receiver? Bluetooth is also listed as a connection option. The receiver is included for LIGHTSPEED.

Is the POWERPLAY charging system in the box? It is not among the listed contents. The box includes the mouse, receiver, extender cable, AA battery, grip tape and documentation.

Before you buy

Pick this mouse if you want LIGHTSPEED or Bluetooth, a HERO 25K sensor and up to six programmable buttons in one wireless gaming model. The AA-powered configuration is the straightforward choice if you don’t already have POWERPLAY, the lighter 68 g configuration depends on using that system without a battery. Check which power setup you’ll actually use before treating either weight or the unlimited-battery-life claim as the deciding factor.
