JBL Xtreme 5 Portable Speaker, 90W, IP68, Blue with Shoulder Strap

Take music to the pool or beach with the blue JBL Xtreme 5, a portable speaker designed for louder listening away from home. Its shoulder strap and floating hooks make it easier to carry hands-free, while IP68 protection covers water and dust resistance.

The sound system combines a subwoofer, dual tweeters and AI Sound Boost, with a stated maximum output of 90 watts. Smart EQ Mode also adjusts the equalizer in real time based on what you’re listening to.

Battery life is rated for up to 24 hours, with Playtime Boost adding up to four more. One specific caveat: lossless audio over USB-C requires compatible content from supported apps or services.

Key features

The Xtreme 5 connects over Bluetooth or USB and offers stereo output. For everyday listening, the combination of a subwoofer and dual tweeters is intended to bring out bass and clarity, while AI Sound Boost helps manage the sound as the volume rises. Smart EQ Mode takes a different approach from manually adjusting settings: it automatically tunes the EQ to the audio being played.

Ambient edge lighting adds a visual element that changes with the music. It can also show cues for power, Bluetooth pairing, battery level and an Auracast connection. That may be useful when the speaker is across a room or outdoors, where checking a phone screen is less convenient.

The listed battery life is up to 24 hours, plus four hours with Playtime Boost. A 10-minute charge is stated to provide two additional hours. These are supplied runtime claims, not a guarantee of the same result in every listening situation.

Everyday use

The strap and floating hooks suit carrying the speaker between a patio, a beach gathering and the next spot without holding it in your hands. Its IP68 protection and stated drop-proof build make it more suited to outdoor settings than a basic speaker without those protections. The information provided doesn’t specify the conditions for drop resistance, so it’s best not to treat that claim as protection against every kind of impact.

For a playlist or podcast at home, Bluetooth offers a straightforward wireless connection. USB-C is the route for lossless playback, but that feature depends on having compatible audio content and a supported app or service. A smaller, simpler speaker may be easier to carry when portability matters more than the Xtreme 5’s larger sound-focused setup.

Who it’s for

A solid pick if you want a portable speaker with a shoulder strap, water and dust protection, ambient lighting and a long stated playtime for gatherings or outdoor listening. The visual battery cue and automatic EQ may also appeal if you’d rather not manage sound settings manually.

It’s not for you if you’re looking specifically for lossless playback without checking your content and app support, or if a compact, simpler speaker better suits your plans. The Xtreme 5’s feature set is centred on bigger portable sound and carrying convenience, rather than minimal size.

Practical questions

Can it play music without Bluetooth? Yes. USB is listed as a connectivity option, and lossless playback is supported through USB-C when the content and service are compatible.

How long can it play? The stated runtime is up to 24 hours, with Playtime Boost adding up to four hours. A 10-minute charge is also stated to add two hours of playtime.

What do the lights show? The ambient edge lighting responds to music and can provide cues for power, Bluetooth pairing, battery level and an Auracast connection.

When it makes sense

Choose the Xtreme 5 if you want a carry-friendly speaker for outdoor listening and value its strap, IP68 protection, lighting and stated battery runtime together. If lossless USB-C audio is a deciding factor, first make sure your preferred content and service are supported, otherwise, Bluetooth and the speaker’s automatic EQ offer a simpler everyday route.
