JBL Boombox 4 JBLBOOMBOX4BLUAM Portable Bluetooth Speaker, Blue, IP68

For music by the pool or in the backyard, the JBL Boombox 4 is built to bring substantial sound without needing a mains connection. Its blue finish and IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating suit settings where a smaller indoor speaker may feel out of place.

It connects over Bluetooth and has USB-C playback for compatible lossless audio. Auracast can link it with other supported JBL speakers, including a stereo pair of two Boombox 4 units.

That size of sound comes with a trade-off: at 5.9 kg and 50.55 x 21.34 x 26.42 cm, it is portable, but not a light speaker to carry around all day. If you want easy-to-pack audio, a smaller model may make more sense, choose this one when output and outdoor flexibility matter more.

Key specifications

The Boombox 4 is a Bluetooth speaker with stereo audio output and a listed maximum output power of 65 watts. Its sound system includes two woofers, two tweeters and three passive radiators. AI Sound Boost is designed to adjust playback in real time, while two Bass Boost modes let you choose between deeper or punchier bass.

JBL lists up to 28 hours of playtime on a charge, with Playtime Boost adding up to 6 hours. The headline maximum is up to 34 hours, so treat that as a best-case claim rather than a guaranteed session length. Buyer feedback on battery life is mixed, as is opinion on value, sound volume and clarity are among the points customers praise.

The IP68 rating covers waterproof and dustproof protection. For lossless playback, connect a compatible source through USB-C, the audio content and app or service must also support lossless playback.

Who it’s for

It makes sense if you want one speaker for a backyard gathering, a poolside playlist or moving music between indoor and outdoor spaces, and you value fuller bass over a compact footprint. The two bass settings offer a simple way to shift the sound’s emphasis without changing the source.

It might not be a great match if your priority is a speaker that slips easily into a small bag or stays light during longer walks. At nearly 6 kg, the Boombox 4 is better suited to carrying between nearby spots than treating like a pocket-sized Bluetooth speaker. From the way it is set up, it favours bold shared listening over discreet personal audio.

Everyday use

Picture setting it beside the patio while people move between the kitchen and backyard: Bluetooth keeps playback wireless, and the rugged rating is relevant when dust or water is part of the setting. For a wider stereo soundstage, you can pair two Boombox 4 speakers, Auracast also supports connecting multiple compatible JBL speakers to the same music. Those options are useful if one speaker does not cover the area, but they depend on having additional compatible speakers.

Customers’ impressions are not all the same. Some highlight the volume, sound and convenience for different spaces, while opinions on battery life and whether the speaker is worth its cost vary. That makes the stated playtime a planning guide, not a promise for every listening session.

Before you decide

Can it connect to more than one speaker? Yes. Auracast supports linking multiple Auracast-enabled JBL speakers, and two Boombox 4 speakers can be stereo paired.

Does USB-C guarantee lossless playback? No. You also need compatible lossless content from a supported app or service.

Is up to 34 hours the standard battery estimate? JBL describes up to 28 hours on a charge, with Playtime Boost adding up to 6 more. Actual battery experience may vary, buyer feedback is mixed.

Should you buy it?

Choose the JBL Boombox 4 if you want a substantial Bluetooth speaker with IP68 protection, bass controls and options to connect compatible speakers for shared listening. Its weight and size are meaningful drawbacks for frequent long-distance carrying, and the maximum battery figure should not be treated as a fixed runtime. If those compromises suit your plans, it is a more relevant fit than a basic compact speaker, if easy portability comes first, look for a smaller format.
