Set in 1634, the story follows French Jesuit missionary Father Laforgue on a journey through the New France wilderness to a Huron mission. A young translator and guide, Daniel, and Algonquin companions travel with him as the expedition moves into unfamiliar territory.
Directed by Bruce Beresford, the film stars Lothaire Bluteau and Aden Young, alongside August Schellenberg, Sandrine Holt and Tantoo Cardinal. At 1 hour and 41 minutes, it centres on a demanding journey and the tensions between faith, culture and life on the land.
Where it shines
Black Robe is a story-led historical drama, shaped around the people and beliefs encountered along Laforgue’s mission rather than action alone. The wilderness trek gives the narrative a clear sense of movement, while the meeting of French missionaries and Algonquin and Huron communities brings cultural and spiritual differences to the foreground. For viewers choosing between a fast-moving adventure and a film focused on belief, relationships and cultural encounter, this DVD offers the latter approach, with a journey providing its dramatic backbone.
What changes when a mission brings a newcomer into a community with its own spiritual traditions? The film follows that tension through Laforgue’s experiences, making it a considered pick for a movie night centred on historical drama and character-led storytelling.
