Being There: Deluxe Edition Blu-ray — Peter Sellers, Political Satire

Some films are chosen for easy laughs, others appeal to viewers who enjoy humour with a sharper edge. Being There brings those qualities together in a story about an isolated man entering the world of political power. What happens when people mistake a simple point of view for profound wisdom? Peter Sellers leads a comedy with serious undertones and an unmistakably satirical perspective.

Why it’s worth it

Chance has spent his life in a Washington, DC, townhouse, with television as his main window on the world. When he is suddenly drawn into the circle of influential political figures, his limited experience is taken for insight. That premise gives the film room to play with assumptions about status, authority and the way people interpret what they hear. The humour comes from the contrast between Chance’s straightforward outlook and the weight others place on his words, making the story more than a sequence of comic moments.

Peter Sellers stars alongside Shirley MacLaine, Melvyn Douglas, Jack Warden and Richard Dysart. Buyers particularly praise Sellers’ performance and the cast, while describing the film as funny, thoughtful and pointed in its political humour. Those qualities make this a fitting choice for a movie night when you want comedy that leaves room for a more serious idea beneath the jokes.

The essentials

• Format: Blu-ray, NTSC
• Type: Feature film

The running time is 2 hours and 10 minutes. The story centres on Chance’s encounters with political power brokers, including Melvyn Douglas in an Oscar-winning role. It’s a focused pick for viewers who enjoy character-led films, classic performances and satire that draws its humour from social misunderstandings rather than constant punchlines.

If you’re choosing between a comedy aimed mainly at light, fast-paced laughs and a film with a more reflective edge, Being There leans into both wit and thoughtful observation. Its premise also makes it easy to follow as a group: viewers can enjoy the awkward situations as they unfold while picking up on the wider political and social commentary. The Blu-ray format offers a physical edition for adding the film to a home collection or setting aside for a planned movie night.

Getting the most from it

Set aside time for the full feature and enjoy the gradual way Chance’s unusual place in the world takes shape. The film suits a relaxed viewing where the conversation can continue after the credits, especially among fans of Peter Sellers or political comedy with an offbeat point of view. Its story is also a natural fit for a classic-film night: the central misunderstanding is clear, while the reactions around Chance provide the film’s deeper comic tension.

Should you buy it?

Choose this Deluxe Edition Blu-ray if you want Being There in a physical format and value a film that combines Peter Sellers’ performance with political satire and thoughtful humour. It’s especially well suited to viewers looking for a character-driven comedy rather than a story built only around quick gags, and to collectors who want this distinctive film on Blu-ray.
