Alfred Hitchcock: The Essentials Collection DVD – Five Classic Films and Bonus Features

As a DVD-Video NTSC collection, Alfred Hitchcock: The Essentials Collection brings five landmark films together in one set: Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho and The Birds. With a combined runtime of 10 hours and 5 minutes, it gives you a substantial lineup for a weekend of suspense films or a focused watch through Hitchcock’s celebrated work.

The films feature stars including James Stewart, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Anthony Perkins and Tippi Hedren. English Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1 audio, along with French Dolby Digital 2.0 audio, gives you a choice of listed audio tracks.

Where it shines

This collection is built around five distinct Hitchcock films rather than a single title, making it easy to move from Rear Window’s mystery to Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho and The Birds without assembling them individually. It suits a themed movie night, a Hitchcock film marathon or a growing home collection centred on classic suspense and mystery.

Each film also has its own listed bonus content. Explore production photographs and notes for Rear Window, archival material and a feature commentary for Vertigo, or a music-only audio track and screenwriter commentary for North by Northwest. Psycho’s extras include storyboards for the shower scene and behind-the-scenes photographs, The Birds includes a deleted scene, its original ending and Tippi Hedren’s screen test. These additions offer context and related material to explore after the films.

What matters most

The collection combines Drama, Horror, Mystery & Suspense and Thriller titles, with a Canadian Parental Guidance (PG) rating. Its 10 hours and 5 minutes of listed runtime makes it a ready-made choice when you want several acclaimed suspense films in one package, while the bonus features add material for viewers interested in how the films were made and presented.

For everyday playback, the format is DVD-Video, NTSC. Check that your DVD player supports NTSC DVD-Video before settling in. The listed audio options are English Dolby Digital 2.0, English Dolby Digital 5.1 and French Dolby Digital 2.0. Buyers describe the films as enjoyable and the set as a welcome starting point for building a Hitchcock library, those impressions speak to its appeal as a collection, while the five-film lineup and extras are the concrete reasons to choose it.

Tips for day-to-day use

Pick a film to suit the evening, or follow the full collection in the order presented: Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho and The Birds. The set works well for shared viewing, and its separate bonus material gives you another way to spend time with each title after the main feature. For a deeper dive, pair a film with its related commentary, production notes, photographs or archival extras where listed.

When it makes sense

Choose this set if you want five major Hitchcock films gathered in one DVD collection, with a range of English and French audio tracks and substantial film-specific bonus content. It is also a practical alternative to tracking down the titles one by one when your aim is to build a focused Hitchcock shelf or plan a multi-film suspense night. The combination of familiar stars, varied mystery and thriller stories, and extras tied to individual films makes it especially suited to viewers who want both the classics and more to explore around them.
