Key features
The Great Escape centres on an audacious attempt to break out of a prisoner-of-war camp, giving the film a clear, tense premise rooted in a real wartime memoir. Its story is directed by John Sturges, who reunites here with The Magnificent Seven stars Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Charles Bronson. That combination makes this release relevant both to viewers discovering the film and to fans of its director and cast.
The 4K UHD Blu-ray format is the defining reason to choose this edition over a standard Blu-ray when adding the film to a UHD collection. Region Free is another practical feature for buyers who want a disc without a regional restriction. For playback, use a compatible 4K UHD Blu-ray player and screen, the Region Free designation concerns the disc’s region coding, not the equipment required by the format.
Who it’s for
This edition suits viewers who want a physical copy of a classic Second World War escape film in 4K UHD, as well as collectors interested in Sturges’s work or performances by McQueen, Coburn and Bronson. Its source material also gives the story a distinct historical context: it is an adaptation of Paul Brickhill’s wartime memoir, rather than a fictional premise presented without that connection.
It’s a good fit if you are choosing between a standard Blu-ray and a UHD edition for a compatible home cinema setup, or if Region Free is a useful feature in your disc collection. The film’s focus on a prisoner breakout also gives it a straightforward place in a line-up of classic war dramas and escape stories.
Everyday use
The disc is suited to a planned film night at home: select it on a compatible 4K UHD Blu-ray player and settle in for a story built around a determined escape attempt. Its familiar cast can make it an appealing choice for a shared viewing with fans of classic cinema, while the memoir connection offers a point of context for viewers drawn to wartime stories.
As a physical-film purchase, this edition works particularly well for someone who prefers to keep a UHD collection rather than rely on finding a title through a streaming service. Choose it for the film, its director and cast, and the 4K UHD format, the Region Free marking adds flexibility when selecting a disc for a collection.
Buying verdict
Arrow Video’s The Great Escape brings together a notable cast, John Sturges’s direction and a Second World War breakout story based on Paul Brickhill’s memoir. The 4K UHD format makes it a natural choice for viewers collecting films in UHD, while the Region Free disc marking is useful for buyers seeking a region-free release. It is best suited to classic-film fans and home viewers with compatible UHD Blu-ray equipment who want this particular wartime story on disc.
