Product description
The 18-inch step-over frame gives adults a way to pass without opening a full-height gate. Its pressure-mounted design fits openings from 22 to 38 inches wide. A built-in small pet door lets smaller animals pass through while the barrier helps contain small dogs and puppies. Could this compact format suit the doorway you need to manage?
Who it’s for
It makes sense if you want a low indoor barrier for a small dog or puppy in a doorway, hallway, or room opening, without adding a walk-through gate. The small pet door can be useful in a multi-pet home where a smaller animal needs a separate route through the opening. The gate is 18 inches tall, so its intended role is managing access for small pets rather than creating a tall barrier.
It’s not for you if you need a taller gate or a barrier designed for pets beyond the listed small-dog and puppy use. The frame is designed to fit a specific width range, so measure the opening before choosing it. For a more substantial barrier that people walk through, a taller walk-through gate is a different approach, this model prioritizes a low step-over frame and a small-pet pass-through.
Benefits
The alloy-steel frame provides a metal alternative to a plastic barrier, while rubber bumpers are described as helping protect walls from scuffs. Pressure mounting means the gate is held in place at the opening rather than installed as a permanent doorway fixture. The supplied wall cups and mounting hardware support that setup, and the adjustable width accommodates openings within the stated range.
The separate pet door measures 7.5 inches wide by 7.75 inches high. That gives smaller pets a way through without requiring the main barrier to be moved. Buyer feedback often highlights straightforward setup and the convenience of stepping over the low frame, some also describe it as useful for keeping pets out of rooms or away from carpets. Those comments are individual impressions, not a guarantee of how a particular pet will respond.

What to clarify
What opening size does it fit? It is designed for openings from 22 to 38 inches wide. Measure the intended space before purchase, especially if you plan to use it near stairs.
Can a smaller pet pass through without moving the gate? The built-in opening is intended to let smaller pets pass while helping keep larger pets contained. Whether it works for your household depends on the animals’ size and behavior.
How do adults get through? The frame is 18 inches tall and uses a step-over design rather than a walk-through door, so adults pass over it instead of opening a gate panel.
Buying verdict
Choose the Carlson Lil Tuffy if a compact, pressure-mounted barrier for a small dog or puppy matches your opening and you want both a step-over frame and a small-pet door. Its appeal is the combination of adjustable width, a metal frame, and separate access for smaller pets. If your priority is a taller barrier or a walk-through opening for people, a different gate style may better fit that need.
