Practical tips

Match the cartridge to a printer in the compatible list before installation. The chip is already fitted, so there is no separate chip-installation step. For use with compatible cartridges, the product guidance recommends turning off the printer’s Cartridge Policy and automatic upgrade functions. If a “Non-HP ink cartridges” message appears after installation, select “OK” to continue printing.

The page-yield figure is based on 5% coverage, so actual output varies with how much toner each page uses. For documents with mostly text, that benchmark offers a useful way to compare the rated yield with your usual printing volume. Keep the second cartridge ready for the next replacement, rather than having to source another cartridge as soon as the first is depleted.

Included in the pack

The pack contains two CF258A black toner cartridges. Choosing a two-pack instead of a single cartridge provides a second replacement for ongoing office printing, with the same stated 3,000-page yield per cartridge.

Practical questions

Which printers can use this cartridge? It is listed for the HP LaserJet Pro M404dn, M404dw and M404n, and the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdn, M428fdw and M428dw. Confirm your printer’s model name against that list when selecting a replacement.

Does the chip need to be installed separately? No. The chip is built into each cartridge and is designed to display the toner level.

How many pages does the two-pack yield? The stated yield is 3,000 pages per cartridge at 5% coverage on Letter/A4, or 6,000 pages across both cartridges. Actual yield depends on page coverage.

Is it worth it?

This two-pack suits offices and home workspaces that print black-and-white documents on a listed M404 or M428 printer and want a replacement cartridge already on hand. Its built-in chip, printer-specific compatibility and combined 6,000-page rated yield make it a practical way to plan routine toner changes. It makes sense if you prefer keeping a second compatible cartridge ready while using the first.
