Shakti Mind Explosion: 50th Anniversary Tour Live Audio CD

For a focused listen to live world fusion, Mind Explosion brings together performances recorded during Shakti’s 2023 50th anniversary tour. It’s a physical Audio CD centered on the group’s live sound rather than a new studio session.

Released in 2025, the album is described as Shakti’s final album. Its selections were curated from concert recordings by co-founding guitarist John McLaughlin and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram.

The lineup includes McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, Selvaganesh Vinayakram, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan. The result is a document of the ensemble’s later years and a tribute to Hussain, who died in December 2024.

Everyday use

This release suits listeners who want Shakti’s music in a concert setting and prefer to own an Audio CD. The program draws on material ranging from the group’s 1976 debut to extended versions of two compositions from This Moment, the group’s 2023 album. That span gives the collection a historical angle as well as a live-performance focus.

Compared with choosing a studio album for a more controlled recording, this is the pick for hearing performances captured across a tour. The recordings were selected from many hours of concerts, so the album is a curated collection rather than a claim to present the complete tour. You’ll appreciate it if the performance context and the group’s changing repertoire matter as much as the individual songs.

Pros

The clearest reason to consider this release is its combination of a specific moment in Shakti’s history with a lineup that includes several long-standing members and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan. McLaughlin and Vinayakram selected the performances, and the release is framed as a celebration of Hussain’s musical life and contribution to the ensemble.

The music brings together Indian and Western traditions through guitar, guitar synth, tabla, other percussion, vocals, konokol, and violin. For someone exploring Shakti beyond a studio recording, the live format offers a different way to encounter the group’s repertoire. Better avoided if you specifically want a studio-only album, this release is made from live tour recordings.
