Purple Dragon AXT Camping Hatchet, 14.7-Inch Hand-Forged Steel Blade, Wood Handle

At 14.7 inches, the Purple Dragon camping hatchet is sized for outdoor woodwork. Its hand-forged high-carbon steel blade is shaped for splitting, chopping, and carving. A curved wooden handle and included leather sheath make it a practical tool to carry for camping and bushcraft.

Quick sizing guide

The 14.7-inch overall length gives this hatchet a compact format for campsite tasks and outdoor work where a hand tool is useful. Its 4.3-inch blade is designed with a splitting-wedge head, making it suited to splitting wood as well as chopping and carving. At 1.1 kg, it has a substantial feel for a hatchet of this size. The leather sheath helps cover the blade when the tool is stowed or carried.

If you are choosing between a compact hatchet and a longer-handled splitting axe, this format keeps the tool focused on portable, close-range work. It can serve for preparing firewood at camp, trimming branches, or handling bushcraft and garden tasks. The product is also described for forest use, so it can accompany a range of outdoor woodwork rather than being limited to one setting.

What stands out

The head is hand forged from high-carbon steel and has a splitting-wedge profile. That combination supports a useful mix of wood-splitting and chopping tasks, while the plain blade edge also suits carving work. The head is secured to the handle with two ring wedges, and its polished, lacquered splitting face is designed for repeated contact with wood.

The curved wooden handle is shaped to sit comfortably in the hand. The product details identify the handle as hickory, its S-curve and long wood fibers are intended to support a firm grip and absorb some impact during splitting. This makes the handle design a meaningful part of the tool, not just a way to hold the steel head.

The included hand-stitched leather sheath fastens with a snap to keep the hatchet covered when packed away. Customers also highlight the natural look of the wooden handle, the rugged construction, and how the shape feels in hand. Feedback on sharpness and weight is mixed, so these impressions are best treated as individual preferences rather than a uniform experience.

For a practical campsite scenario, the hatchet can be used to split wood for a fire, then stowed in its sheath alongside other outdoor gear. Its compact length and combination of splitting, chopping, and carving functions make it a flexible choice when carrying a dedicated tool for each task is less convenient.
