Dawn by Octavia E. Butler, Unabridged Audiobook Narrated by Julienne Irons

Some science-fiction listeners want spectacle and a fast-moving adventure, others prefer a story that gives its ideas room to unfold. Dawn, the first book in Octavia E. Butler’s Xenogenesis Trilogy, suits the second mood, bringing biology, psychology, and questions about humanity into an unabridged audiobook narrated by Julienne Irons.

With a listening length of 8 hours and 26 minutes, it can fit a longer listening session or be enjoyed in shorter stretches over several days. The audiobook keeps Butler’s novel at the center, with Irons as the narrator.

How to use it

Start with Dawn as the opening installment of the Xenogenesis Trilogy. Its unabridged format lets you listen to the complete book, whether you set aside time for an extended session or return to it during a commute or evening routine. The full length is 8 hours and 26 minutes, so you can plan listening sessions around the time you have rather than treating it as a brief audio selection.

For listeners choosing between idea-driven science fiction and stories focused mainly on action, this audiobook leans toward the former. The book is associated with genetic-engineering science fiction, while customer responses also point to its interest in biology, psychology, and the human condition. Those themes give you plenty to consider as the story develops.

What you’ll notice day to day

The audiobook’s unabridged presentation keeps the focus on Butler’s writing and the progression of the story, with Julienne Irons voicing the narration. Customer responses describe the book as engaging and thought-provoking, and praise its vivid storytelling and imaginative science-fiction world. Listeners who enjoy stories that prompt reflection alongside the plot may find its questions about humanity especially compelling.

Reactions also highlight a well-developed female lead. Views on character development overall are more mixed: some readers value the characters, while others would have liked more development or clearer distinctions between them. That difference is useful to keep in mind if character depth is a major part of what you seek in a novel.

What to know

Dawn is Book 1 of 3 in the Xenogenesis Trilogy. It is an unabridged Audible audiobook, published by Grand Central Publishing, with a listening length of 8 hours and 26 minutes. The publication date is May 30, 2023, and the narrator is Julienne Irons.

The book’s appeal is more than its science-fiction setting: customer feedback points to a distinctive blend of psychological and biological ideas, alongside reflections on human nature. If you tend to choose science fiction for its concepts and themes rather than for space-travel spectacle alone, that emphasis can help you decide whether this is the kind of story you want to spend time with.
