Key points

This edition is unabridged, so listeners can follow the complete audiobook rather than an abridged adaptation. Its 12-hour-and-6-minute runtime suits a longer listening session or a story enjoyed in shorter stretches over several days. Holly Black is the author, and Christine Lakin is the narrator.

The story combines vampire fantasy with touches of horror, magic, and romance. In buyer feedback, listeners often point to the compelling characters, especially the central heroine, and praise the writing as vivid and absorbing. They also appreciate the book’s approach to vampire fiction for moving beyond familiar clichés. Some listeners describe the plot as meandering, so the appeal is especially strong for those who enjoy spending time with characters and atmosphere as a story unfolds.

Everyday use

An audiobook works well when reading a printed copy is not convenient: press play during a quiet routine, or set aside time to follow the story without splitting attention between a page and another task. Because this edition is unabridged, it also offers a way to experience the full book in audio form. Its substantial runtime makes it suited to listeners who like returning to the same story across multiple listening sessions rather than finishing a brief recording in one sitting.

Getting the most from it

For a character-led fantasy, give the narrative room to develop instead of treating each session as a standalone episode. Listening in manageable stretches can make it easier to keep track of the characters and the blend of romance, horror, and magic. Those who enjoy a distinctive writing style may also appreciate listening somewhere they can focus on the narration and the details of the prose.

Listeners’ opinions highlight the book’s engrossing quality and its sharply drawn characters, along with an evocative writing style. The romance adds another dimension to its darker fantasy elements, making the audiobook a natural choice for someone looking for vampire fiction with both emotional and eerie notes.
