Aquila AQ-7B Minstrel Banjo Strings, Medium-Tension DGDFA Nylgut

New Nylgut synthetic-gut strings are designed to bring a warm, full tone and a gut-like playing feel to a Minstrel banjo. Their composite construction offers an alternative to conventional synthetic strings while keeping the familiar comfort of gut-inspired playability.

This medium-tension set uses DGDFA tuning, giving Minstrel banjo players a clearly identified setup for practice, performance, or recording. The five-string format makes it easy to choose a complete set for the instrument.

If you value a gut-like feel and warmer sound, the AQ-7B offers those qualities in a synthetic string. Players focused on keeping an existing string setup may instead prioritize matching their current string type and tuning, this set is specifically configured for DGDFA.

Fit and sizing

Made for Minstrel banjo, the AQ-7B set contains five strings in medium tension and DGDFA tuning. Use those details to match the set to your instrument and preferred setup. For a practice session at home or a recording, the defined tuning and medium tension provide a straightforward starting point, while the Nylgut material brings a distinctive feel and tone to the instrument.

The strings are made from Aquila’s proprietary synthetic composite, developed to feel similar to genuine gut. This makes them relevant for players seeking gut-inspired playability in a synthetic material, whether they are learning, refining their technique, or preparing a Minstrel banjo for a performance.

What stands out

Aquila describes New Nylgut as producing a fuller, warmer sound than traditional nylon or PVDF, with less of the metallic-like character associated with some synthetic designs. That tonal profile can suit players looking for a more rounded voice from their banjo, particularly in practice and recording settings where the instrument’s character matters.

The material is also designed to absorb less moisture than other strings. Aquila connects that construction with improved intonation and tuning stability, a useful consideration when selecting strings for regular playing across different settings. Carefully gauged string densities are intended to support accurate intonation across the fretboard, while the smooth feel is designed to make the strings comfortable under the fingers.

Compared with choosing strings primarily for a familiar nylon setup, this set emphasizes a gut-like feel, warm tone, and its specified DGDFA tuning. Those are practical priorities for players building a Minstrel banjo setup around this sound and feel.
