HP 303 Black Original Ink Cartridge (HP ENVY & Inspire series)

What this is

This is the HP 303 Black Original Ink Cartridge, designed to work with specific HP ENVY, ENVY Inspire, ENVY Photo and Tango X printers. It aims to deliver sharp black text and reliable prints, with an emphasis on first-time-right installation and consistent quality over time.

Who it’s for

If you frequently print documents that require clean, legible text and you value predictable results from your ink cartridges, this cartridge targets everyday home and small-office use. It’s most sensible for users who stay within the compatibility list and prioritise genuine HP inks for long-term compatibility and ease of recycling.

What to expect on paper vs real-world use

On the page yield, HP quotes approximately 165 pages for black content. In practice, actual pages will depend on your document mix (text-heavy versus graphics-heavy), the printer model, and settings such as print quality and paper type. If you print mainly text documents with occasional images, you’ll likely see efficient use of the cartridge, while heavy graphics can reduce page yield somewhat. If you prioritise price-per-page over absolute volume, you might compare it with other ink options, but keep in mind compatibility and guaranteed results matter with Original HP Ink.

Pros

• Comes from HP as an Original Ink cartridge, designed to work with marked HP printers for reliable performance.
• Clear emphasis on first-time right installation and consistent print quality.
• Easy recycling option through HP Planet Partners, with free recycling envelopes and boxes available online.

Cons

• Page yield is an approximate figure and may vary by print job and device settings, real-world results could be lower with heavy graphics.
• Only compatible with a defined set of HP ENVY, ENVY Inspire, ENVY Photo and Tango X models, so you’ll need to check compatibility before purchase.
• As a black cartridge, it won’t help with colour prints, you’ll need the corresponding colour cartridge if you print in colour.

What to check before buying

• Confirm your printer model is on the compatibility list to avoid compatibility issues.
• Consider your typical print mix: if you print many pages with graphics, evaluate whether the black-only yield aligns with your cost-per-page expectations.
• Look at recycling options and whether you want to participate in HP’s Planet Partners programme.

How it compares to other approaches

If you’re weighing Original HP Ink against third-party options, the HP 303 provides guaranteed compatibility and reliable performance with the listed printers. It tends to be the safer pick for those who want consistency and straightforward maintenance. For users seeking potentially lower upfront costs or specific non-HP models, a so-called third-party cartridge might seem attractive, but it risks quality variation and warranty concerns.

Practical example of use

Imagine printing a stack of monochrome documents for a school project. You’d likely notice crisp linework and solid blacks, which helps readability. If you’re printing drafts with occasional lines or borders, you’ll probably keep a steady cadence of prints without frequent cartridge changes, assuming your print volume stays within the expected range.

Final quick check

Consider the printer model you own and your typical print workload. If you value brand‑verified compatibility, recycling options, and straightforward print quality from HP, this cartridge is worth considering. If your use leans heavily towards graphics or if you own a model outside the listed compatibles, you may want to explore alternatives that better fit those needs.
