JBL Sense Lite JBLSENSELITEBLKAM Open-Ear True Wireless Headphones, IP54

For a walk where you want music without closing off your ears, the JBL Sense Lite uses an open-ear design. It leaves the ear canal uncovered, so you can stay more aware of nearby sounds than with sealed in-ear headphones. The trade-off is a different listening style: these are built around awareness and comfort, not a closed fit.

Best use cases

The open-ear format is suited to everyday listening when awareness of your surroundings matters, such as walking or running outdoors. JBL’s OpenSound technology uses air conduction, while the ear hooks combine soft liquid silicone with memory wire. The design aims to position the earbuds comfortably and keep sound leakage low, though an open fit is not the same as the isolation of conventional in-ear buds. If you want to block out surrounding sound, a sealed design is the more relevant comparison, the Sense Lite is aimed at listeners who prefer to keep their ears uncovered.

The IP54 rating and stated resistance to water and dust make these relevant for workouts and light rain. Four outer beamforming microphones, supported by noise reduction, are intended to keep calls clear by reducing background and wind noise. That makes them worth considering for a walk where you may switch between music and a phone call, rather than carrying a separate set of headphones for each task.

Buyer feedback is positive about sound and comfort, with some also noting clear calls. Fit opinions are mixed: some say the earbuds stay in place during walks, while others find them too large or difficult to position securely. Since the open-ear shape depends on how it sits around each ear, fit is the main personal consideration to weigh up.

Getting the most from it

The JBL Headphones app lets you adjust sound with a 10-band EQ and customize the touch controls on each earbud for music and calls. This gives you options to tailor the listening experience without changing the open-ear format. The adaptive bass boost also adjusts bass according to music volume, while the 18 x 11 mm drivers are designed for balanced sound with added depth.

For longer listening, the stated battery allowance is up to 8 hours from the earbuds and 24 more from the case. A 10-minute charge is specified to add up to 3 hours, which can help when you need a quick top-up before heading out. These are maximum figures from the product details, so actual listening time may vary with use.

Buying verdict

It makes sense if you want true wireless headphones that leave your ear canals open, offer app-based sound and control adjustments, and include an IP54 rating for outdoor activity. The mix of music playback and four-mic calling also suits days when you move between listening and conversations. You may want to skip it if you specifically need a sealed fit or if secure ear-hook positioning is essential and the shape does not suit you, buyer experiences with fit are not uniform. The key choice is whether staying aware of your surroundings matters more than the isolation of a standard in-ear pair.
