GL.iNet Wi-Fi 7 router Flint 3

A basic router can be enough for everyday browsing, but a busy home with gaming, video calls and many connected devices may benefit from more room to manage traffic. The GL.iNet Flint 3 combines tri-band Wi-Fi 7, including 6 GHz, with VPN support and five 2.5G ports. Its listed wireless speed is up to 9 Gbps, though the speed you get depends on your internet service and home network. It suits you if you want newer wireless features alongside controls for a more demanding household, it may not suit you if you only need simple Wi-Fi and have no use for its extra network tools.

What matters most

The Flint 3’s main appeal is the breadth of its feature set. Wi-Fi 7 features include Multi-Link Operation (MLO), OFDMA, 4K QAM and preamble puncturing, which are intended to support lower latency and connectivity in busier environments. Tri-band operation adds a 6 GHz band, while five 2.5G ports offer wired connections for compatible equipment. These features are most relevant when several people are online at once or when you want more options than a basic router provides, they don’t guarantee a particular result in every home.

For a practical example, a household could have one person on a video call, another gaming and several devices streaming or browsing. The router also supports WireGuard and OpenVPN, with listed speeds of up to 680 Mbps for each. Keep in mind that actual VPN speed can vary with your internet provider, network conditions and VPN server location. AdGuard Home support adds DNS-based filtering, and parental-control support includes Bark for website filtering, safe search and usage limits.

Best use cases

This model is aimed at homes with multiple connected devices, people who want Wi-Fi 7 features, or users interested in VPNs and configurable network tools. The product information describes coverage of up to 2,000 square feet, but layout, walls and other conditions can affect coverage, so treat that figure as a guide rather than a promise for every home. For a smaller or less demanding setup, a simpler router may cover the essentials without the additional features. For a particularly challenging layout, the stated coverage alone may not tell you whether one router will reach every room.

Tips for day-to-day use

Initial setup can be done by connecting the Flint 3 to a computer with an Ethernet cable and opening its web admin panel. The product information also points to a setup video. Update the firmware during initial setup, as recommended by the manufacturer. From there, you can configure wireless access and, if useful, explore VPN, AdGuard Home and parental-control options rather than enabling features you don’t need.

For day-to-day use, think about which devices benefit from a wired connection and which can stay on Wi-Fi. A console or desktop used for gaming, for example, may be a candidate for Ethernet, while phones and tablets can remain wireless. The router has DDR4 1 GB memory and eMMC 8 GB storage, and its higher storage capacity is presented for users interested in installing additional plugins. Those options will matter more to hands-on users than to someone who simply wants to connect and browse.

Three specific questions

Does the 9 Gbps figure guarantee that speed? No. It is the listed wireless speed, your internet plan, network environment and connected devices affect real-world performance.

Can I use a VPN with this router? It supports WireGuard and OpenVPN. Listed speeds are up to 680 Mbps for each, but actual results vary with network and VPN conditions.

Are parental controls included? The product information specifies support for Bark, including website filtering, safe search and usage limits. Check the setup options to see how those controls fit your household.

Is it worth it?

The Flint 3 is worth considering if Wi-Fi 7, tri-band connectivity, multiple 2.5G ports or built-in support for VPN and filtering tools are relevant to your setup. Its feature range gives power users more to work with than a basic router, while the firmware update and configuration options add a little setup work. If your needs are limited to routine browsing, or you need guaranteed coverage in a particular floor plan, the listed specifications alone may not justify choosing this model.
