ChangM Smart Recessed Lights 4-inch

Quick overview

When a room needs more than a fixed white ceiling light, these ChangM smart recessed LED lights offer colour, adjustable white tones and app control in a canless 4-inch format. The four-pack is designed for ceiling installation and includes a junction box, the listed features also include Alexa compatibility, Bluetooth control and dimming from 1% to 100%.

You can choose from 16 million colours or tune the white light from 2700K to 6000K, depending on whether you want a warmer setting for relaxing or a brighter one for reading. Tenants or homeowners who only need straightforward everyday lighting may find a conventional downlight simpler, the extra controls matter most if you plan to change the atmosphere or group lights by room.

How to use it

The BRmesh app connects to the lights using your phone’s Bluetooth. The product description says the app does not require registration, an internet connection, a hub or a gateway. From the app, you can adjust colour and brightness, group lights, save scenes and use the available dynamic modes. Bluetooth mesh is described as supporting control of up to 125 lights, which may be useful for a larger setup than this four-pack alone.

Alexa voice control is also listed for switching the lights on or off, changing colour and dimming. Keep in mind that the lights do not work with Google Home, HomeKit, HomePod or Matter, and they do not support a dimmer switch. If you want to control them by voice, check that Alexa is part of your setup, otherwise, the app is the stated control route.

Practical tips

Before installation, measure the ceiling opening and available space above it. The listed cut-out range is 3.5–4.7 inches, the outside diameter is 4.7 inches, and the required ceiling clearance is greater than 1.57 inches. Those measurements are more useful than relying on the “4-inch” name alone, especially when replacing an existing fixture.

For a living room, you could set a warm white scene for a quiet evening, then switch to a colour effect for a gathering. The product also lists 23 dynamic modes and music synchronisation. The lights are described as IC-rated and suitable for damp locations, with suggested uses including bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and basements. Check the fit and the intended room conditions before choosing them, the listing does not provide details about a particular ceiling construction.

In your case

It suits you if you want adjustable colour and white light, app-based grouping, or Alexa control, and your ceiling opening falls within the stated range. The 1080LM rating and dimming options give you more control over the lighting than a basic fixed-output downlight, while saved scenes can make repeat settings easier to use.

It may not suit you if you need Google or Apple smart-home compatibility, want to use a wall dimmer, or would rather avoid app-based setup. For simple illumination without colour changes, a standard recessed light may be a more direct choice. For a smart-light setup, the main decision is whether Bluetooth and Alexa meet your control needs.

Three specific questions

Does the set need a hub? The description says no hub or gateway is required. The BRmesh app uses your phone’s Bluetooth, it also says app control does not need an internet connection.

Can I use these with a wall dimmer? No. The listing specifically says they do not support dimmer switches, brightness is adjusted through the app or Alexa.

What ceiling opening do they need? The stated cut-out diameter is 3.5–4.7 inches, with more than 1.57 inches of ceiling clearance required. Measure before buying rather than assuming every 4-inch opening will fit.
