IRIS USA 500381 High-Sided Open-Top Cat Litter Box, Gray

Some cat owners prioritize easy access and visibility, while others prefer a more enclosed litter area. The IRIS USA 500381 takes the open-top approach, with tall sides intended to help contain scattered litter and spraying. Its fixed dimensions make it worth comparing with your cat’s space needs before choosing.

Tech summary

This is a plastic pan-style litter box with an open top and a high-sided scatter shield. The design keeps the entry and interior visible while adding a barrier around the sides. That combination may suit cats that need an accessible tray but tend to kick litter around.

• Type: Open-top pan litter box
• Dimensions: 19 x 15 x 11.75 inches
• Material: Plastic
• Color: Gray
• Model: 500381

Best use cases

The tall walls are the main reason to consider this model over a basic low-sided tray: they’re designed to keep more kicked litter and spraying within the pan. The open top also makes it easier to see the litter and check your cat’s habits without lifting or removing a cover. For a daily routine, that can make a quick visual check straightforward.

It’s a great fit if you want an open litter box with higher sides and your cat can comfortably use the listed 19 x 15-inch footprint. Compared with a fully covered setup, this tray gives you direct access to the interior and keeps the top open, it does not provide a roofed enclosure. Consider the listed dimensions against your cat’s size and how much room they need to turn around.

Buyer feedback is positive about litter containment, but opinions on size are mixed: some find the box roomy, while others say it is too small for their large cats. Cleaning feedback is mixed as well, with some finding it easy and others reporting difficulty removing urine clumps. These experiences are useful context, not a substitute for checking the dimensions and your own cleaning preferences.

Box contents

The listed components are the cat litter container and a cat litter scoop. The product information does not specify a litter type or any additional accessories, so plan to use litter you already know is suitable for your cat.

Questions before you buy

Is this a covered litter box? No. It has an open top, with tall sides forming the scatter shield.

What comes with the litter box? The listed contents are one cat litter container and one scoop.

Is it large enough for a large cat? The product is described as large, and its dimensions are 19 x 15 x 11.75 inches. Buyer opinions about its size vary, so compare the footprint with the space your cat needs rather than relying on the size label alone.

Final verdict

The IRIS USA 500381 is a practical choice to consider when you want an open tray with higher sides, easy visibility, and a scoop included. Not the best choice if you already know your cat needs more floor space than its 19 x 15-inch footprint provides, or if you want a covered enclosure. Its strongest buying case is the combination of open access and a built-in barrier around the pan.
