HBN 204R Outdoor Remote-Control Timer with 2 Grounded Outlets

Practical tips

If your outdoor setup calls for scheduled lighting or remote control of connected equipment, the HBN 204R combines both in one plug-in timer. Its photocell can switch lights on at dusk and off at dawn, while countdown settings let you choose an automatic shutoff after 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours. Two grounded outlets make it useful for setups such as holiday lights, garden lighting, fountains, pumps, and sprinklers.

For a simple schedule, choose a countdown, for lighting that follows changing daylight, use the photocell mode. The RF remote adds a way to operate the timer from up to 100 feet in direct line of sight, with a signal designed to pass through walls and doors.

Mount the unit vertically at least 2 feet above the ground for optimal waterproof performance. Its flat plug design can also help when outlet space is tight.

Strengths

The main advantage is having several ways to control outdoor equipment in one device. The light sensor handles a dusk-to-dawn routine automatically, while the countdown options suit situations where lights or equipment should turn off after a set interval. Always-on and always-off settings provide straightforward manual control when a schedule is not needed.

Compared with a basic timer that relies on a fixed schedule, the photocell responds to ambient light, compared with switching equipment by hand, the remote offers control from a distance. That makes the 204R a practical fit for seasonal displays or a yard setup where the outlet is less convenient to reach. The two grounded outlets support a setup with more than one connected device, and the flat plug helps make use of a crowded outlet area.

Buyers often praise the straightforward setup and remote operation, including using the remote from indoors. Feedback is mixed on durability and dusk-to-dawn consistency, and some buyers find the 6-inch cord short. These experiences vary, so the documented timer modes and installation position are useful considerations when planning the setup.

Should you buy it?

Choose the HBN 204R if you want outdoor lighting or equipment controlled by a dusk sensor, a selectable countdown, or an RF remote, rather than relying only on manual switching. Its two grounded outlets, several operating modes, and remote control bring flexible scheduling to holiday lights, garden fixtures, fountains, and other listed outdoor uses. For the best fit, plan for vertical mounting at least 2 feet above ground and position the unit with the remote's direct-line-of-sight range in mind.
