David Gray Nightjar Audio CD, 19 Previously Unheard Songs

A 19-track collection of previously unheard songs gives David Gray listeners material from the writing sessions behind Life in Slow Motion. Nightjar offers a way to explore that creative period beyond the familiar album.

The release is a companion piece to the 20th anniversary edition of Life in Slow Motion, not a description of that album’s tracklist. Its connection to the same sessions gives the collection a clear place for listeners who want to hear more from that body of work.

Rather than presenting only the established sound associated with David Gray, the collection is described as including both classic-style material and more experimental pieces, with unexpected turns along the way.

Benefits

The strongest reason to consider Nightjar is its combination of a defined connection to Life in Slow Motion and material that has not been heard before. The 19 tracks offer a substantial collection, while the mix of familiar-feeling songs and more experimental work suggests some variety in the listening experience. The available details don’t identify individual tracks, so the appeal is in exploring the collection as a whole rather than choosing it for a specific song.

How does it differ from simply revisiting the anniversary edition? Nightjar draws on the same writing sessions but is presented as its own companion collection. That makes it relevant for listeners interested in the surrounding creative work, rather than someone seeking only the original album.

Quick overview

Nightjar is an Audio CD by David Gray, with 19 never-before-heard songs. The songs came from the writing sessions that led to Life in Slow Motion. The collection is described as moving between classic David Gray material, more experimental pieces, and unexpected twists. No individual song titles or track-by-track details are provided here, so buyers looking for a particular song will need more specific track information before deciding.

Best use cases

You’ll appreciate it if you already enjoy David Gray and want an additional collection tied to the sessions behind Life in Slow Motion. It also suits a listening session focused on discovering unreleased material, especially if a mix of more familiar and experimental approaches sounds appealing. As an Audio CD, it fits a collection built around physical music releases.

Better avoided if you’re looking specifically for Life in Slow Motion itself: Nightjar is described as a companion release, not that album. It may also be less useful to listeners who choose music by individual track, since the supplied details don’t name the songs.

Should you buy it?

Nightjar makes the most sense as an add-on for David Gray listeners curious about songs from the Life in Slow Motion writing period. Its clearest point of difference is the 19-track set of previously unheard material, with both classic-style and more experimental pieces noted. If your goal is the anniversary edition or the original album, this collection serves a different purpose, choose it for the additional session-era material, not as a substitute for that release.
