NEEWER ND1.5 4"x5.65" 5-stop ND square filter

This square neutral density filter from NEEWER helps control shutter speed and aperture when shooting in bright sunlight, keeping highlights in check while allowing motion blur or shallower depth of field for video and photography. It fits matte box systems and brings practical exposure control to 4K and 8K capture scenarios.

Key Points

The filter is designed for use with matte boxes such as NEEWER, Tilta and SmallRig mini systems, so it mounts in a holder rather than screwing on to the lens. This makes it versatile for different focal lengths and quick adjustments during a shoot. The optical glass is colour-neutral, which aims to preserve accurate colour balance and image clarity when recording. For outdoor filmmaking, the 5-stop density reduces incoming light enough to use wider apertures or slower shutter speeds without overexposure, and its ultra-thin profile minimises added bulk to your rig. 📷

Technical Specifications

Benefits

Because the filter mounts in a matte box, it works well across a range of lenses and focal lengths for filmmaking setups that require rapid lens changes or variable focal lengths. The multi-layer surface treatment helps resist scratches and makes cleaning easier, and the hydrophobic and oleophobic properties repel water, oil and fingerprints. This reduces the need for frequent cleaning during outdoor shoots and keeps the image plane clearer. For motion shots under bright skies, the reduced light allows smoother motion portrayal and greater creative control. 🌤️

Usage Recommendations

Use the filter with a compatible mini matte box frame to take advantage of its square form factor and to avoid vignetting on wide lenses. Handle the glass with the included cleaning wipes to maintain the coating and avoid abrasive cloths that could damage the surface. Consider that, according to the manufacturer, the optical density is fixed at ND1.5 so additional stops will require stacking filters or variable ND solutions if you need more attenuation. For compact rigs the low weight and thin profile make it straightforward to carry and fit without upsetting balance when mounted on lightweight arms or gimbals.
