The removable lens cover is useful when packing the camera in a bag, and it is easy to take off for shooting. The cover’s flexibility helps when changing batteries or memory cards, because it does not need to be fully removed. Also, note that deeper protective cases or hard-shell options may be preferable if you expect heavy impact or very wet conditions.
