The Substance Blu-ray – Coralie Fargeat’s satirical film starring Demi Moore

For a film night centred on sharp satire and unsettling transformation, The Substance brings a provocative story to Blu-ray. Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, with Margaret Qualley as Sue and Dennis Quaid as Harvey. Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the film turns its story of beauty and reinvention into a dark, twisted fable.

Getting the most from it

Elisabeth, a former star who has been dismissed from her fitness television show, is offered a mysterious drug that creates a younger version of herself. The two bodies must alternate weeks, with no exceptions. That premise gives the film a clear focus: the pressure to remain desirable, the pursuit of a better self and the consequences of trying to control the transformation. Its two-hour-and-twenty-minute runtime makes it a feature-length choice for a dedicated film evening, rather than a quick watch. English, Spanish and Turkish subtitles are listed for the Blu-ray.

What stands out

Fargeat combines body horror with biting satire, building the story around Elisabeth and Sue’s uneasy arrangement. Moore leads the cast as Elisabeth, while Qualley plays Sue, Quaid appears as studio head Harvey. The result is a film with a distinctive premise and a strong emphasis on performance, suited to viewers looking for something more provocative than a conventional drama or light comedy. What happens when the promise of becoming a better version of yourself comes with a strict cost? The film makes that question central to its twisted take on beauty culture.

Buyers have praised the acting and the film’s dark humour, with some describing it as an entertaining, grotesque satire. Reactions to its horror are more divided: the film contains substantial gore, which is worth bearing in mind when choosing it for a group or a shared viewing. That combination of sharp comedy and graphic body horror is central to its identity, rather than a side detail.
