Sony WH-1000XM5 (WH1000XM5/S) Wireless Headphones, Silver, 30-Hour Battery
Product description
For travel, work and other listening where background noise gets in the way, the Sony WH-1000XM5 combines over-ear noise cancellation with wireless listening. Auto NC Optimizer adjusts noise cancelling to wearing conditions and surroundings. Multipoint makes it easier to switch between two paired Bluetooth devices. The silver finish, touch controls and included carrying case round out a feature set aimed at everyday use.
Tips for day-to-day use
On a flight or in a busy shared space, noise cancelling and ambient sound mode offer different ways to manage what you hear around you. For calls, four beamforming microphones and voice-processing features are designed to pick up your speech, touch controls also handle calls, playback and volume. Speak-to-Chat pauses music and lets in ambient sound when you start talking, while Adaptive Sound Control adjusts volume based on your environment and learned behaviour.
If you move between a cell phone and another Bluetooth device, multipoint can keep both connected and switch to the one receiving a call. Battery life is rated for up to 30 hours, and a three-minute charge can provide up to three hours of playback with an optional USB-PD-compatible AC adapter. The carrying case is useful for keeping the headphones together between trips. Unlike a simpler wireless pair without these listening and switching features, the WH-1000XM5 offers more ways to manage noise and device changes, though some buyers may prefer a less feature-rich design.

What stands out
Noise cancellation is the headline feature: two processors work with eight microphones, and Auto NC Optimizer adapts the setting to the wearer and environment. That gives these headphones a clear use case for listening during travel or in surroundings with people talking. The Integrated Processor V1 is listed alongside support for SBC, AAC and LDAC audio formats. Soft-fit leather, a lightweight design and over-ear fit are intended to make longer listening sessions more comfortable, but individual fit can vary.
Buyer feedback is positive about sound, noise cancellation and battery life. Comfort and fit are more divided, and some buyers report hinge or headband durability problems. Those concerns are worth weighing if you expect frequent handling or want particular reassurance about long-term durability. The listed features explain the appeal, but they do not establish how a specific pair will feel or hold up over time.
Is it worth it?
It’s a good fit if you want over-ear wireless headphones with active noise cancelling, ambient sound options, call-focused microphones and the convenience of connecting to two devices. They also suit someone who values long rated battery life and a case for carrying them. It’s not for you if confidence in hinge durability is a deciding factor: buyer reports include breakage concerns, and the available details do not resolve how common or representative those experiences are. For a more straightforward listening setup, a simpler pair may be enough, the WH-1000XM5 makes more sense when its noise and switching features are useful in your routine.
