Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush HX9990/31

Technical details

If brushing pressure is hard to judge, the Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is designed to adjust when you press too firmly and signal when to ease off. That feedback, along with guided brushing in the app, may suit someone who wants more help building a consistent routine than a basic electric toothbrush provides.

This pink model comes with two brush heads and a charging travel case. Its A3 Premium All-in-One head is intended for plaque removal, gum care and stain removal. The handle offers five modes—Clean, White+, Gum Health, Deep Clean and Sensitive—with three intensity levels each, for 15 combinations. It also makes up to 62,000 bristle movements per minute.

SenseIQ monitors pressure, motion and coverage, adjusting intensity when it detects too much pressure. A light ring at the base offers a visible cue, while the connected app provides guided brushing and personalised tips. A replacement reminder tracks brush-head use. The manufacturer claims up to 2000% more plaque removal than a manual toothbrush, treat that as a specific manufacturer comparison, not a guarantee of your own results.

Getting the most from it

The range of settings is most useful when it helps you settle on a comfortable routine, rather than prompting constant changes. For example, you could choose Sensitive for a gentler session, then use the light ring as a reminder to relax your grip if it lights up. The app can add prompts and feedback for people who like coaching while they brush.

It's a good choice if you value pressure feedback, several brushing modes and app guidance in one handle. Compared with a simpler electric brush, it offers more adjustment and tracking, someone who just wants a basic powered clean may have little use for those extras.

Usage tips

Start with a mode and intensity that feel comfortable, then let the brush do the work instead of pressing harder. If the pressure ring lights up, ease off. Use the app if guided brushing would help you keep track of coverage, and pay attention to the replacement reminder rather than waiting for a brush head to feel worn. The supplied charging travel case is handy for taking the toothbrush along, though the listing does not state battery life or charging time.

Before deciding

What modes are included? Clean, White+, Gum Health, Deep Clean and Sensitive, each with three intensity levels.

Does it connect to an app? Yes. The app offers guided brushing, tips and personalised content, and lets you select preferences.

What comes in the box? The product name lists two brush heads and a charging travel case. It does not specify the case’s charging details.

Before buying

The main trade-off is complexity: app features, adaptive protection and 15 settings are useful only if you expect to use them. Maybe it's not a fit if you prefer a straightforward toothbrush without app-connected guidance, or if you want to compare battery runtime before choosing, that information is not provided here. If pressure cues and a more guided brushing routine are priorities, the extra controls have a clear purpose. If they are not, a simpler electric model may better match what you need.
