JBL over-ear headphones Live 780NC

When traffic, office noise, or nearby conversations keep pulling you out of your music, the JBL Live 780NC is designed to reduce those distractions with adaptive noise cancelling.

It also folds for storage, so it’s a practical format for moving between a desk and a bag.

The main buying question is whether you want noise control and call features in one pair, rather than a simpler set of wireless headphones.

Best use cases

These headphones are aimed at listening in changing environments. The adaptive noise cancelling uses six microphones to analyse surrounding sound and adjust in real time, the JBL Headphones app also lets you control how much of the outside world comes through. That could be useful on a commute, or when you’re trying to focus at a desk but still want the option to hear more around you.

For calls, JBL describes a two-microphone system with noise cancellation intended to reduce traffic, wind, and background hum. That makes the Live 780NC worth considering if you move between music and calls during the day. It suits you if you want a foldable over-ear design with adjustable noise control. It isn’t for you if you need product details on weight, fit, or call performance before deciding, those aren’t provided here.

Product specs

• Type: Wireless, foldable over-ear headphones
• Driver: 40 mm dynamic driver
• Sound: JBL Signature Sound, Hi-Res Audio in wired and wireless modes, and JBL Spatial Sound for stereo content
• Noise control: True Adaptive Noise Cancelling 2.0, with six microphones and app adjustments
• Calls: Two-microphone system with an AI-trained noise-cancelling algorithm
• Connectivity: Bluetooth, LE Audio and Auracast are also listed
• Battery: Up to 80 hours with ANC off, or up to 50 hours with ANC on
• Quick charge: A five-minute charge is stated to provide four hours of playtime

The battery figures depend on whether ANC is on, so the longer claim won’t describe every listening session. JBL also lists wired listening and app-based sound adjustments, giving you alternatives to relying on wireless playback alone.

Where it shines

The appeal is the combination: adaptive noise cancelling, a way to adjust outside sound, call-focused microphones, and a foldable build. For example, you could lower the interruptions while working, then use the app to let more of your surroundings in when you step out. A basic wireless pair without noise cancelling takes a simpler approach, the Live 780NC makes more sense if that extra control is a priority.

JBL also lists Hi-Res Audio in both wired and wireless modes, plus Spatial Sound for stereo content. Those features broaden the listening options, but they don’t establish how the headphones will sound to every listener. Without having tried them, it’s sensible to treat the audio and noise-cancelling claims as listed features rather than a guarantee of a particular experience. The provided information also doesn’t give weight or fit details, which may matter for long listening sessions.

Final decision

The Live 780NC is a considered choice if you want over-ear wireless headphones that fold, offer adjustable adaptive noise cancelling, and include features for calls as well as music. Its stated battery life is substantial, but varies from up to 80 hours with ANC off to up to 50 hours with it on. If you mainly want straightforward wireless listening and won’t use noise control, call features, or app adjustments, a simpler pair may suit your needs better.
