Forsaken Country: Unabridged Audiobook by Allen Eskens, Narrated by Brian Troxell

Settle in for a suspenseful crime story during a commute, a walk or a quiet stretch at home. Forsaken Country is an unabridged audiobook by Allen Eskens, narrated by Brian Troxell.

At 11 hours and 9 minutes, it offers a full-length listening experience for anyone who wants a story to return to over several sessions or follow in longer stretches.

Published by Little, Brown & Company, this audiobook was released on Sept. 20, 2022. Its crime and amateur-sleuth mystery positioning makes it a natural fit for listeners drawn to suspense and character-focused storytelling.

What matters most

The unabridged format presents the complete audiobook rather than a shortened edition. That makes it suited to listeners who want to follow the story at its full length, with Brian Troxell as the narrator throughout. The 11-hour-and-9-minute runtime also gives a clear sense of the commitment: it can accompany a regular listening routine, or be enjoyed in longer sessions when time allows.

The book is categorized in amateur-sleuth mysteries and crime thrillers, offering a useful point of reference for choosing your next listen. It sits closer to a suspense-led mystery than to a short, self-contained audio feature. If you enjoy crime fiction with room for an unfolding storyline and developed characters, this format brings the whole book into your listening time.

Reader feedback often emphasizes the suspense, engaging plot and the interest of the characters, with particular appreciation for the writing and vivid detail. Some readers also enjoy how the story connects with other books in the series, while others describe it as accessible on its own. These are reader impressions, but they point to a book that can appeal both to returning fans and to listeners seeking a compelling crime story.

How to use it

Choose this audiobook when you have time for a longer narrative rather than a brief listen. Its full-length runtime works well across repeated commutes, walks or everyday tasks: resume where you left off and keep following the story without needing to set aside a single uninterrupted block of time. For focused listening, a quieter setting can help you stay with the narrative and its details.

Practical tips

The audiobook is narrated by Brian Troxell, so the listening experience is centred on a single spoken performance of Eskens’ novel. If you are deciding between reading a print edition and listening, this version offers a hands-free way to experience the book and suits routines where keeping your eyes on the page is impractical. The full, unabridged presentation is also a good fit if you prefer not to miss material through a shortened adaptation.

For a series reader, the connection to other books may add another reason to continue with Eskens’ work. For a first-time listener, the crime-mystery category and reader comments about the story’s readability provide a helpful sense of its appeal without requiring a particular listening pace.
