Dorman oil filter cap 917-003

A worn or damaged oil filter cap can complicate routine maintenance, especially when you want to replace the part rather than keep relying on the one already fitted. The Dorman 917-003 is an aftermarket oil filter cap, giving you a replacement option for a part that the description says was previously available only through dealers. It is listed in black and backed by Dorman’s limited lifetime warranty. The key detail missing here is vehicle fitment, so the part number alone isn’t enough to confirm it suits your vehicle.

Where it shines

The appeal is straightforward: this is a replacement part for an oil-filter-related repair, not a tool or an upgrade with extra features to weigh up. Dorman describes it as a newly available aftermarket solution made with quality materials, but the listing doesn’t identify the material or provide construction details. That makes the product’s role clearer than its specific design advantages.

Picture a routine oil service where the existing cap needs replacing. Having a replacement part to hand can be more useful than trying to make do with a cap that may no longer be suitable. If you prioritize a named replacement part, this is the sort of option to investigate, if you prefer a universal part that can be adapted across different vehicles, this listing doesn’t establish that kind of flexibility.

What matters most

Fitment should guide the decision. The product name gives a part number, 917-003, but the information provided doesn’t list compatible vehicles, engine details, dimensions, or installation requirements. Match the part number against your vehicle’s requirements before ordering, and don’t assume that an oil filter cap with the right general description will fit. Without those details, it’s difficult to judge whether this is the correct replacement for a particular repair.

The warranty is another useful point, though its terms aren’t included in the product information. Dorman identifies it as a limited lifetime warranty, that doesn’t explain what is covered or how a claim works. Given how it is positioned, this product may suit a buyer looking for a replacement part from an aftermarket supplier, but the available details don’t support claims about durability or performance.

It suits you if you’ve identified the Dorman 917-003 as the right part for your vehicle and want an aftermarket oil filter cap. Better avoid it if you can’t confirm fitment, or if you need installation instructions, material details, or warranty conditions before deciding.

Best use cases

This cap is most relevant when replacing an existing oil filter cap as part of vehicle maintenance. It’s a focused purchase rather than a general-purpose spare: the product information gives no dimensions or broader compatibility guidance, so choosing it without a confirmed part match carries uncertainty. If you’re planning the work yourself, identify the required part before starting rather than relying on the colour or product category to establish fit.

There’s no care or maintenance guidance in the supplied details, so there isn’t a basis for recommending cleaning methods or service intervals. The practical comparison is between replacing a confirmed part and trying to keep using the existing one: the Dorman option makes sense only when its part number matches the job. For a buyer still diagnosing what needs replacement, more vehicle-specific information should come first.

Final thoughts

The Dorman 917-003 is worth considering when you need an oil filter cap and have confirmed that this exact part number fits your vehicle. Its aftermarket availability and stated limited lifetime warranty are relevant, but the listing leaves out the fitment and technical details needed to make a confident match on its own. Buy it for a verified replacement job, hold off if you’re still guessing which cap your vehicle requires.
