Wilson GST Leather Game Football (Junior Size) - Brown
Product description
What it is
The Wilson GST Leather Game Football is a junior-sized leather football designed to combine Wilson’s GST performance with a refreshed look. It aims to deliver a softer, more controllable feel right out of the box, making it a practical option for youth players developing passing and catching skills.
Design and materials
On the surface, this ball uses Wilson’s Light Leather Formula, described as the softest leather on the market. The leather is chosen to help fingers sink in for better control during throws and catches. A key visual and functional feature is the patented sewn-on stripes, made from a composite material rather than paint, which purportedly provides 82% more grip for easier release. The lacing is also designed with grip in mind, the patented Accurate Control Lacing (ACL) uses a pebbled texture to improve grip in varying conditions.
Performance rationale
If you prioritize grip and release for more precise throws, the GST Leather’s combination of soft leather, sewn stripes, and textured lacing is aimed at delivering consistent control. For younger players who are still refining ball handling, these features can translate to more reliable passes and receptions during practice and games.
Who it’s for
This model targets youth players needing a smaller, lighter leather football that still offers a premium feel. The junior size and dual manufacturing locations (Vietnam and Ada, Ohio) suggest a balance between accessibility and consistency in construction.
Pros and cons
- What stands out: the soft leather feel, enhanced grip from sewn stripes, and the grip-enhanced ACL lacing can help with control.
- Potential limitations: as a leather football, it may require conditioning and may be more sensitive to moisture compared to composite options. Availability and sizing could influence your choice if you’re comparing to other junior footballs.
Use case and tips
For a practice session focused on passing accuracy and hand placement, this GST model can be a solid choice. Consider dry conditions for best grip, especially when first breaking in the leather. If you’re shopping for a youth player who plays primarily in wet weather or needs a rugged, low-maintenance ball, you may want to weigh other materials.
What to check before buying
- Confirm the junior size fits your player’s age and hand size.
- Consider your typical playing conditions, leather can react differently in moisture than synthetic options.
- Look for consistent manufacturing quality across Vietnam and Ada, Ohio production runs.
Practical use example
Imagine a wide throwing drill where a young quarterback needs quick release. The GST Leather’s sewn stripes and pebbled ACL can help the hands find the grip faster, reducing misthrows caused by a slippery feel. In route-running practice, receivers can rely on more predictable spirals when the ball leaves a confident grip.
