## Description

Choosing a poultry treat can mean looking for a small occasional reward or a larger supply to keep on hand for chickens and visiting birds. SANSECT’s dried black soldier fly larvae come in a 10-pound bag, making this a bulk-format option rather than a small trial size.

The larvae are sold as a protein-rich treat for chickens and wild birds, with the product also described for ducks and reptiles. The listing reports 42%–45% protein and at least 85 times more calcium than dried mealworms, those are product claims, not a promise of a particular result for an animal.

## Tips for day-to-day use

Use the larvae as a treat or feed addition, rather than assuming the product alone covers an animal’s full dietary needs. For a backyard flock, they can be offered as an occasional extra alongside the flock’s usual feed. They’re also presented as a way to attract wild birds, so consider where you place them if you feed both poultry and visiting birds.

The package is described as a resealable zipper bag inside a sturdy box, with a stated two-year shelf life when stored in a dry area. That format suits a household that will use a large quantity over time. It’s a great fit if you want dried larvae in bulk for regular treat-time use. You may want to skip it if you only need a small amount, since the listed package size is 10 pounds.

## Tech specs

- Product: Dried black soldier fly larvae
- Package size: 10 pounds
- Protein: 42%–45%, as stated in the product listing
- Calcium claim: At least 85 times more than dried mealworms
- Ingredients and claims: Non-GMO, additive-free, no sugar or artificial additives
- Storage: Store in a dry area, resealable zipper bag
- Intended animals: Chickens, wild birds, ducks, and reptiles

## Pros

The main practical advantage is the combination of a substantial bag size and a dry, resealable format. Compared with buying live treats, dried larvae are positioned as a convenient option to store and portion as needed. The listing also describes them as whole larvae, which may appeal to keepers who prefer a visible, recognizable treat over a processed feed format.

Buyer feedback is generally enthusiastic about how readily chickens eat the larvae, and some buyers describe the supply as lasting a long time. Opinions on odor are mixed, however, and feedback about whether the larvae hold together is not uniform. Those impressions may matter if you are sensitive to feed odors or expect every piece to arrive intact.

## Questions before you buy

**Can these larvae be fed to animals other than chickens?** The product is also described for wild birds, ducks, and reptiles. The broader listing mentions other small animals, but check that a treat is appropriate for the particular animal before feeding it.

**Are the larvae dried or live?** They are sold as dried black soldier fly larvae, not live feed.

**How should the bag be stored?** The product information recommends a dry storage area and describes a resealable zipper bag. It states a two-year shelf life.

## Final verdict

SANSECT 10BSFL is worth considering if you want a bulk supply of dried larvae to use as a treat for chickens or to offer to wild birds. Its protein and calcium figures are notable product claims, while the resealable packaging supports storage between feedings. The 10-pound size is the key buying decision: it makes more sense for ongoing use than for someone who wants to test a small quantity first.
