## Description

Starting a drill hole on metal can be frustrating when the bit wanders from the mark. This Mayhew Tools center punch set is intended to create a starting point for precise metal drilling, helping give the bit a defined place to begin. Its listed construction is heat-treated alloy steel with a black oxide finish.

A seven-piece set may suit a workbench where you want a set of punches on hand rather than relying on one tool. The product details don’t list the individual punch sizes, though, so the piece count alone doesn’t tell you whether the set covers your particular jobs. What matters more: having several pieces available, or knowing the exact size you need?

## How to use it

Place the punch tip where you want the hole to start, then strike the tool to make a mark in the metal before drilling. For example, when laying out a hole on a metal workpiece, that small starting mark can help keep the drill bit from skating away as you begin. This is a focused, manual tool for preparing a drilling point, it is not a drill or a substitute for one.

Without having tried it, the product information supports a straightforward use case, but it doesn’t explain how the seven pieces differ or identify their sizes. If you need a particular punch dimension, that missing detail matters more than the set count.

## Pros

- The stated purpose is clear: starting precise drill points in metal.
- Heat-treated alloy steel is the listed material, with a black oxide finish.
- A seven-piece format offers multiple pieces in one set, rather than the single-tool approach.

The limitation is that no individual sizes or piece-by-piece breakdown are provided. That makes it difficult to tell whether the set is a match for a specific hole layout or a job that calls for a known punch size. Worth considering if you want a group of center punches for general metal-drilling preparation and don’t need to confirm a particular size from the available details. It’s not for you if your purchase depends on a specified punch size that isn’t listed here.

## Spec sheet

- **Name:** Mayhew Tools Center Punch Set
- **Type:** Center punch set
- **Capacity:** 7 pieces
- **Material:** Heat-treated alloy steel
- **Color/finish:** Black oxide
- **Dimensions:** Package dimensions are listed as 18.034 L x 3.81 H x 4.318 W centimeters
- **Weight:** Listed package weight is 1.0 pounds

The dimensions and weight refer to the package information provided, not stated measurements for an individual punch. No individual tool dimensions, storage case details, or punch-size range are specified, so avoid treating the seven-piece count as proof of a particular selection.

## Final verdict

This set is most compelling when your aim is to mark starting points for drilling metal and you’d rather have several center punches together than buy a single punch. Its stated steel construction and black oxide finish describe the materials, while the intended job is easy to understand. The buying decision is less clear if you need a specific size: the listing gives no size breakdown, and that makes fit for precision work harder to judge. Choose it for the set format and stated drilling-prep use, look for a listing with explicit punch dimensions if exact sizing is essential.
