Maelstrom 40L Hiking Backpack with Rain Cover, Wet/Dry Pocket and Ripstop Nylon

For hikers and travelers who want room to organize day-trip gear, the Maelstrom 40L pack combines a roomy main compartment with multiple pockets. It weighs 2.2 pounds and is made from water-resistant ripstop nylon. Choose it for separated storage and trail-ready features, a simpler pack may suit someone who prefers fewer compartments.

Highlights

The 40-liter capacity gives you space for hiking essentials, travel items, or gear for a short camping trip. A padded, breathable back panel and adjustable padded shoulder straps are designed for carrying comfort, while the adjustable chest buckle helps keep the pack centered. The buckle also functions as a survival whistle for quick access in an emergency.

Organization is a standout feature. The pack has a main compartment, a top pocket, three front zippered pockets, two zippered waist pockets, and two mesh side pockets. Inside the main compartment, a waterproof wet pocket separates damp clothing or personal items from the rest of your gear. That layout is useful after a workout, swim, or rainy hike when you want to keep wet items contained.

The water-resistant 210D ripstop nylon shell is paired with an included rain cover, stored in a small pocket under the backpack. Reflective markings add visibility, and side straps can secure trekking poles or be adjusted to hold other gear. Buyers often praise the storage, capacity, lightweight feel, and padded straps. Feedback on fit and durability is mixed, so comfort and long-term wear can vary by user.

Care & maintenance

Hand wash the backpack. After use, let damp items air out separately from dry gear, using the wet pocket to keep them apart while you travel. Return the rain cover to its storage pocket when it is dry and ready for the next outing. These simple habits help keep the pack organized between hikes and trips.

How to use it

Pack frequently used items in the top, front, or waist pockets, and keep larger gear in the main compartment. The mesh side pockets provide quick access to smaller items, while the internal wet pocket is useful for sweaty clothing or swim gear. On a day hike, for example, you can keep personal essentials within reach and secure trekking poles to the sides when the trail calls for them.

The pack also has a Velcro tab inside for securing a hydration bladder and a top-side opening for its drinking tube. The hydration bladder is not included. A headphone opening provides another route for a cable, and adjustable straps can help secure gear such as a tent or sleeping pad.

Buying verdict

This Maelstrom pack is well suited to adults who want one bag for hiking, camping, travel, or outdoor workouts, especially when separate pockets make packing easier. Its 40-liter capacity, wet/dry storage, rain cover, and pole attachment straps bring practical organization to changing conditions and varied outings. If you value a straightforward, single-compartment approach, a simpler daypack may be a better match, for carrying a broader mix of gear with dedicated storage, this design offers useful flexibility.
