Strengths
The full, unabridged presentation preserves the complete story in audio, while Graeme Malcolm’s narration provides a single voice-led way to follow its mystery and characters. That makes this format distinct from choosing a print edition: it centers the experience on listening, which can suit people who enjoy narrated fiction or want an alternative to reading on a page.
Readers describe the book as entertaining, with particular appreciation for its Highland setting and its portrayal of Lochdubh and the people who live there. They also highlight the character development, including a varied cast with secrets, and a plot they find lively, with twists along the way. These are especially appealing elements for mystery listeners who value both the puzzle and the community around it.
When it makes sense
Choose this edition when you want the Hamish Macbeth story in an unabridged audio format and have time for a listening session, or prefer to enjoy fiction by ear. Its 6-hour-and-19-minute length gives you a clear sense of the commitment, while its place as Book 35 makes it a fitting continuation for established series listeners. For fans of traditional mysteries who enjoy character-rich Highland settings, Death of a Traitor brings the series’ village world and detective storytelling together in a narrated edition.
