## Description

As an Audio CD, Caroline, or Change: The New Broadway Cast Recording brings the music and performances of the New Broadway cast into a dedicated listening format. With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Tony Kushner, it connects the show’s songs with a story set in 1963 Louisiana, as the civil rights movement reshapes the country.

Sharon D Clarke stars as Caroline Thibodeaux, alongside a cast that includes Caissie Levy, Chip Zien, and John Cariani. The recording centers the performers and the musical writing, offering a way to engage with the show through its cast rather than through the stage production itself.

## Benefits

This recording pairs Tesori’s music with Kushner’s book and lyrics, giving listeners a focused way to follow the show’s musical storytelling. Its central character, Caroline, is a Black woman working as a maid for a Jewish family in Louisiana. That setting places family life and work within the wider changes of the civil rights era, giving the songs a clear dramatic context.

Sharon D Clarke leads the cast as Caroline, with performers including Gabriel Amoroso and Adam Makké as Noah Gellman, Caissie Levy as Rose Stopnick Gellman, and Samantha Williams as Emmie Thibodeaux. The ensemble also gives voice to characters such as the Washing Machine, the Dryer, the Bus, and the Moon. For listeners who want the songs and cast performances, the CD offers a different focus from attending or watching a stage production: the musical material takes center stage.

## The essentials

Caroline, or Change was written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, with music by Tony Award winner Jeanine Tesori. The New Broadway Cast Recording was made in collaboration with Roundabout Theatre Company under the Roundabout Records imprint of Broadway Records. Production credits include Elliot Scheiner, Nigel Lilley, Jeanine Tesori, and Van Dean, the recording was edited and mixed by Lawrence Manchester.

The story follows Caroline Thibodeaux and the Gellman family in 1963 Louisiana, at a time of significant social change. This context helps frame the show’s personal relationships and its larger themes while listening. The listed product dimensions are 4.9 x 5.5 x 0.3 inches, making the physical format easy to identify when organizing a music collection.

## Best use cases

Choose this cast recording for a listening session centered on Broadway musical theater, or when you want to revisit the show’s music and performers outside a theater setting. It also suits listeners exploring Tesori’s music, Kushner’s musical writing, or recordings led by Sharon D Clarke. If your priority is seeing staging and choreography, a production serves that purpose, this CD is for engaging with the cast recording itself and the songs that carry the story.

## Is it worth it?

For a Broadway listener who wants the New Broadway cast’s interpretation in an Audio CD format, this release brings together a distinctive central performance, an ensemble cast, and the work of Tesori and Kushner. Its specific setting and character-driven story give the music a dramatic frame, making it a fitting choice for focused listening or for adding this show to a cast-recording collection.
