Breville Coffee Grinder BCG820BSS

Best use cases

Home coffee drinkers who switch between espresso and coarser brews may appreciate having a grinder with room to adjust. The Breville Smart Grinder Pro offers 60 grind settings, programmable grind time, and several ways to collect the grounds, so it can fit into a routine that changes from one brewing method to another.

For a morning espresso, you can select a setting and grind directly into a portafilter, later, the same grinder can dispense into a container or filter basket. That range is useful, though it also means there are more settings to explore than on a basic grinder with a short list of options.

Worth considering if you want to adjust both grind size and dose time rather than rely on one fixed setup. It may not suit you if you prefer a very simple grinder with minimal choices or don’t want to spend time finding settings that work for your brew.

Product specs

The BCG820BSS is a programmable conical burr grinder with 60 settings. Its digital timer adjusts in 0.2-second increments, and the LCD shows the selected grind setting, grind time, and chosen number of shots or cups. Pre-programmed settings are included for different grind needs, but the available information doesn’t specify a single setting as right for every coffee or brew method.

The bean hopper holds 18oz. Grounds can go directly into a portafilter, an airtight container, a gold-tone filter basket, or a paper filter. Included accessories are small and large portafilter cradles, a grinds container with sealing cap, a conical burr, and a cleaning brush. The listed cradles fit 50–54mm and 58mm portafilters. Power is 165 watts at 110–120 volts, and the product carries a 2-year limited warranty, according to the maker.

Where it shines

The practical draw is flexibility without needing a separate grinder for each brewing style. If you make espresso on weekdays but use a French press on the weekend, the broad selection of grind settings gives you options to work with, while the timer lets you adjust the grinding duration in small increments. The display also makes it easier to see the current setting and dose selections before grinding.

Compared with a simpler grinder, this model puts more control and routing choices in reach. That can be useful when you like to fine-tune a routine or switch between a portafilter and a filter basket. The trade-off is that a broad setting range doesn’t remove the need to experiment, buyers looking for a straightforward, set-and-forget process may prefer fewer adjustments. The listed information also gives no dimensions, so it’s difficult to judge how much counter space it will take up.

Buying verdict

The Smart Grinder Pro makes the most sense for a home setup where grind range, timed dosing, and direct grinding into different receptacles are useful features—not just extras. Its 60 settings and programmable increments give you room to tailor a process, while the portafilter cradles and container support different ways of handling grounds.

If you mainly brew one style and want the fewest decisions, its extensive adjustment range may be more than you need. If you regularly change methods and are willing to dial in settings, the combination of adjustable grind selection, timed dosing, and multiple collection options gives this Breville a clear use case. Check the listed 110–120-volt requirement against your intended setup before choosing it.
