## Description

For a first home practice setup, the Alesis Melody 61 MK4 combines a compact 61-key layout with built-in speakers. Its 300 sounds and accompaniment rhythms give beginners options beyond a basic piano tone. A music or tablet rest and access to online lessons are included. The keys are compact and are not touch-sensitive.

## How it fits
This keyboard is geared toward beginners who want an instrument for exploring notes, practicing with a metronome, or playing along with built-in rhythms. The 61 keys offer room for early lessons and simple arrangements, while the lightweight design and built-in speakers make it easier to move between practice spots without setting up separate speakers. For example, a learner could follow sheet music on the included rest, slow down to work through a passage with the metronome, then use a rhythm for a play-along session.

Worth considering if you want one keyboard that supports solo practice and musical experimentation: Split and Layer modes let you assign two sounds across the keys or combine them, and Record Mode lets you revisit a practice session. It might not be a great match if you specifically need touch-sensitive keys for changes in playing dynamics. The manufacturer lists velocity sensitivity as unavailable, so players seeking a more expressive key response may prefer a different kind of instrument.

## Why it makes sense
The appeal here is the mix of guided practice and built-in variety, rather than a piano-only setup. There are 30 demo songs, 300 accompaniment rhythms with auto-chord functions, and a built-in metronome. A headphone output mutes the speakers for private practice, while the auxiliary input lets you connect a phone or tablet. USB-MIDI can connect the keyboard to a Mac or PC for use with music or learning software, Skoove and Melodics lesson access is included.

Buyers describe it as a suitable starting point for beginners, but comments on sound and reliability are mixed. Some find the sounds enjoyable, while others are less satisfied, and reports about whether the keyboard continues working vary. That feedback is worth weighing alongside the feature list rather than treating the number of sounds as a guarantee of a particular sound experience.

## Before you decide
**Does it need a computer to play?** No. It has built-in sounds and speakers for standalone playing, USB-MIDI is available when you want to connect it to a computer.

**Can it run without the power adapter?** Yes. It can use 6 AA batteries, which are not included.

**Can you practice without playing through the speakers?** Yes. Connecting headphones to the headphone output mutes the built-in speakers.

## Buying verdict
Choose the Melody 61 MK4 if a beginner-focused keyboard with built-in speakers, practice tools, lesson access, and a broad selection of sounds suits your plans. Its compact, non-touch-sensitive keys make it a more straightforward learning setup than a keyboard chosen for nuanced dynamic response. If that expressive response is central to your next step, look for an instrument that explicitly offers velocity-sensitive keys.
