## Description

## What it is and what it solves
The SmallRig Cage for Sony FX2 is a modular cage designed to protect the camera while expanding attachment options. It provides built-in 1/4-20 threaded holes and 3/8-16 locating holes for ARRI-style accessories, plus a HawkLock NATO rail for quick attachment of side handles, top handles, and monitor mounts. A built-in cold shoe mount enables mounting a microphone, a light, or other devices, helping you keep essential gear within reach without extra rigging.

## How it fits with the FX2
On the hardware side, the cage is cut to avoid interference with the camera’s flip screen while still offering full access to buttons and ports. A detachable top plate preserves compatibility with the original XLR top handles and works with the rotating top handle ID 4152, reducing viewfinder interference when you need a different shooting angle.

## Stability and handling in practice
The cage is secured to the camera using a 1/4-20 bottom screw and M2.5 side screws to minimise deflection. This setup helps limit camera movement and image shake, which translates to steadier footage in handheld or run-and-gun shooting.

## Quick scene switching and integration
The bottom features a built-in Arca QR plate, enabling fast transitions between tripod, stabiliser, and handheld configurations. It’s compatible with several stabilisers in SmallRig’s range and supports a smooth workflow when you’re moving between shooting setups.

## Cable management and accidental disconnects
A dedicated Cable Clamp for HDMI is included to secure the HDMI cable, promoting stable data transmission during shoots. Note that you should open the HDMI port cover before installing the clamp.

## What to watch for
If you rely heavily on a top handle, remember the top plate is detachable but designed to stay compatible with the original XLR top handles and rotating top handle. Depending on your rig, the added hardware can increase size and weight, which may influence manoeuvrability in tight spaces. It’s not a perfect solution for every setup, but it shines when you need modular connectivity and quick changes between configurations.

## Practical use case
In a run-and-gun documentary scenario, you can attach a side or top handle for better grip, mount a monitor for on-the-fly framing, and secure the HDMI cable to prevent tugging during movement. The Arca-compatible bottom plate makes swapping to a tripod quick, while the HawkLock rail system keeps accessory mounting straightforward without tools.

## What to review before buying
- Confirm the compatibility with your FX2 configuration and whether you’ll use the original XLR top handles alongside the detachable top plate.
- Consider your primary shooting style: if fast configuration changes are routine, the Arca QR plate and HawkLock system are beneficial.
- Check clearance around the flip screen to ensure no interference when adding top or side accessories.
- Plan your cable management strategy, the HDMI clamp is helpful but requires proper setup.

## Alternatives and buying approach
If you prioritise maximum lightweight simplicity, a smaller cage with fewer mounting options might be preferable. If you expect frequent changes between handheld, cage-mounted view, and tripod use, this SmallRig cage provides a balanced set of mounting points and quick-release ability that can save setup time. It’s a sensible middle-ground for cabled rigs that need flexible accessory attachment without sacrificing camera access.

## Is it worth it?
**Buying verdict**: Worth considering if you want a modular cage with multiple mounting points, built-in HDMI security, and easy transitions between stabilisers, handheld, and tripod setups. It suits shooters who value configurable rigs and reliable attachment points without compromising access to camera controls.

## FAQ (where data allows)
- Does it interfere with the FX2 flip screen? Not according to the design, which aims to keep full button and port access while avoiding screen obstruction.
- Can I use the rotating top handle with this cage? Yes, the detachable top plate maintains compatibility with the rotating top handle ID 4152.
- Is the HDMI cable secure during movement? The included Cable Clamp for HDMI is intended to secure the cable for stable data transmission, with a note to open the HDMI port cover prior to installation.

## Final thoughts
If你 prioritise modularity, quick repositioning between shooting modes, and secure cable management, this SmallRig cage offers a practical solution for the Sony FX2. It won’t be the lightest option, but the ability to lock down the camera, attach a range of accessories, and switch between rigs with minimal fuss can be a real time-saver on busy shoots.
