## Description

This natural desert sand substrate from Exo Terra is a 4.5 kg bag of yellow sand designed to create a realistic arid environment for reptiles and invertebrates. It helps reproduce burrowing and nesting behaviour and acts as an effective heat conductor for basking setups, making it useful for desert terrariums and breeding enclosures.

## Key Points

This substrate contains no added colourants or chemical treatments, according to the manufacturer, which helps preserve natural textures and scents. The grain size supports digging and burrow formation, encouraging animals to display instinctive behaviours. It is presented in a 4.5 kg pack that suits small to medium terrariums and vivaria. Consider that very young or delicate species may need a different substrate mix to reduce the risk of ingestion.

## Technical Specifications

- **Name**: **Exo Terra Desert Sand 4.5 Kg Yellow**
- Weight: 4.5 kg
- Colour: Yellow natural sand
- Additives: none, no colourants or chemical treatments added
- Main use: desert terrarium substrate

## Benefits

The sand conducts heat effectively, which can help establish consistent surface temperatures around basking areas and heat lamps. It also favours natural behaviours such as digging and forming burrows, which can reduce stress and increase activity in species adapted to arid habitats. For breeders, the fine, stable texture makes it a suitable substrate when egg-laying is part of husbandry routines.

## Usage Recommendations

Spread an even layer appropriate to the species housed, deeper for animals that burrow and shallower for those that do not. Monitor animals for any signs of excessive ingestion, especially during feeding times. Replace or top up the sand as needed to maintain hygiene and the desired microclimate, and combine with specific amendments only if required by veterinary or husbandry guidance.
