A half-price printer can still be an expensive way to print. A discounted coffee machine might tie you to pricey pods. And a smart camera can look excellent value until you discover that the feature you wanted needs a paid subscription.

With Black Friday and Christmas offers competing for attention, it is easy to focus on the price in the basket. But for products that need refills, power or ongoing services, that is only the first bill.

The useful question is: **what will this cost me to use, not just to own?** Work through these checks in order. Start with anything you cannot avoid paying for, then move on to costs that depend on your habits.

## 1. Price the essential refills before the product

**Start here for printers, pod coffee machines, electric toothbrushes, water filters and anything with replaceable cartridges.** A small saving on the device can disappear if its essentials cost more every month.

Open a second tab and find the exact compatible refill. Do not rely on a search result for the brand alone: similar-looking model names can use different cartridges, heads or filters.

Compare the cost per usable unit. For coffee pods, that might be per drink. For toothbrush heads, it is per head rather than per pack. With printer ink, look at the stated page yield as well as the cartridge price, remembering that your printing habits affect actual results.

Here is an illustrative example, not a live offer. Machine A costs £50 and its pods cost 40p each. Machine B costs £80 and its pods cost 25p each. At one drink a day, the £30 upfront saving on Machine A is overtaken after 200 drinks. That assumes those pod prices stay the same and both machines meet your needs.

**When this matters most:** you expect to use the product frequently. For occasional use, the lower purchase price may still win.

Check whether compatible alternatives are genuinely supported, too. Do not assume that a third-party refill will work simply because it looks right.

## 2. Separate included features from paid features

**Apply this to smart doorbells, security cameras, connected fitness equipment and app-linked gadgets.** The important distinction is not whether a subscription exists, but whether you need it for the job you are buying the product to do.

Read the feature table on the manufacturer's website. Look specifically for what works without a plan, what comes with a trial and what stops when that trial ends. Live viewing, saved recordings and extra notifications may sit in different tiers; check the exact model rather than assuming.

A useful test is to finish this sentence: “Without paying anything after purchase, I can still…” If the answer does not cover your main reason for buying, include the subscription in your comparison.

Use the ongoing price, not just the introductory rate. If there is an annual option, check whether you must pay upfront and what the cancellation terms say. A cheaper annual equivalent is not automatically better value if you only need the service briefly.

**When this matters most:** a Black Friday offer includes several free months. Treat those months as a temporary benefit, not evidence that the product is cheap to run indefinitely.

## 3. Estimate electricity costs using your own tariff

**Move this check higher for heaters, tumble dryers, dehumidifiers and other appliances you expect to run regularly.** For low-use gadgets, it may make much less difference than refills or subscriptions.

Use your electricity unit rate from your bill, rather than an old online estimate. The basic calculation is:

**Power in kW × hours used × your price per kWh = estimated electricity cost.**

For illustration, a device drawing 1kW continuously for two hours uses 2kWh. At a hypothetical unit rate of 25p per kWh, that would cost 50p. This is an example, not a statement of the current UK electricity rate.

Real appliances do not always draw their rated power continuously. Thermostats, settings, room conditions and programme choices can change consumption. Where available, use the product's stated consumption for a relevant cycle or operating mode, and compare like with like.

Be especially careful with winter heating offers. A lower-wattage heater is not automatically cheaper for achieving the same result: how long it runs and the space you are heating also matter.

**When this matters most:** the appliance will be used for long periods. A modest purchase saving deserves closer scrutiny when electricity will be a substantial ongoing expense.

## 4. Check maintenance and spare-part availability

**Use this for vacuum cleaners, coffee machines, air purifiers and appliances you hope to keep for years.** Some ownership costs arrive less often, which makes them easier to miss.

Look for filters, descaling supplies, replacement brush rolls or other routine parts listed in the manual. Check their prices and whether the manufacturer actually sells them for that model. A product page saying “washable filter” is not enough to establish that no replacement will ever be needed.

Maintenance should also fit your routine. A cheaper machine that needs frequent cleaning may be a poor match if you know you will avoid the task. That is not a reason to buy the premium version automatically; it may be a reason to choose a simpler product.

**When this matters most:** the offer is on an unfamiliar brand or a model being cleared. Clearance can be good value, but confirm that essential parts are still obtainable before ordering.

## 5. Compare the cost over a realistic period

Once the earlier checks are done, put the figures together:

**Purchase price + essential refills + necessary subscriptions + estimated electricity + routine maintenance.**

Use a period that suits the purchase. Twelve months can expose an expensive refill habit; a longer view may help with an appliance you intend to keep. Avoid pretending that a distant forecast is exact. Prices and usage can change.

Make two estimates if necessary: your normal usage and a lighter-use version. If the same option looks better in both, the decision is clearer. If the result changes, your habits matter more than the discount badge.

**When this matters most:** two products have different pricing models. It is more useful than comparing their headline percentage reductions. You can browse [the latest deals](/) with a clearer idea of which offers deserve a closer look.

### Quick checks when you are short on time

- Search the exact model number alongside “replacement filter”, “refill” or “subscription”, as appropriate.
- Screenshot the ongoing service price and included features, not just the sale banner.
- For a Christmas gift, consider whether you are giving someone a useful present or an unexpected recurring bill.

## Buy the deal you can afford to use

Before your next purchase, price one essential refill or ongoing service alongside the product. If that cost changes your view of the bargain, finish the wider calculation before checking out. The best saving is one that survives regular use.
