Ireland

A low headline price is only the start of a good buy. Delivery charges, the exact model, the seller’s location and the cost of returning something can all change whether an online purchase makes sense in Ireland.

With Black Friday 2026 coming on **Friday, 27 November**, there is time to prepare without rushing into a purchase. Cyber Monday follows on **Monday, 30 November**, but neither date guarantees the lowest price on the item you want.

The most useful thing to build now is a **true-cost shortlist**: a small record of the products you would genuinely buy, what they cost delivered to your address, and the conditions that would make you walk away. Here is how to put one together before the campaign reaches its busiest stretch.

## Step 1: Give each purchase a job and a spending ceiling

Start with a need, not a retailer’s category page. “Replace the vacuum that no longer holds its charge” is a clearer brief than “find a home appliance deal”. For Christmas gifts, decide who the present is for and what you can comfortably spend before browsing.

Give each planned purchase an all-in ceiling in euro. That ceiling should include delivery and any essential extras, rather than just the product price. A device that needs a separately sold accessory may not fit your budget even if the main item does.

Keep the shortlist manageable. A few purchases you can properly research are more useful than dozens of saved tabs. If you would not consider buying something without a sale badge, pause before adding it.

## Step 2: Record the exact product, not just its name

Create a note or spreadsheet with a separate entry for each item. Record the model number, key specification, included accessories, condition and seller. Add the date you checked the price so you can distinguish an earlier observation from a current one.

This matters particularly for televisions, laptops and small appliances. Similar names do not necessarily mean identical products. Storage capacity, screen technology, battery specification or the accessories in the box can explain a price difference that initially looks like a bargain.

For clothes and footwear, save the size and colour you actually want. For refurbished products, record the stated condition and warranty terms. Compare like with like rather than treating a new product, an open-box return and a refurbished item as interchangeable.

Start checking prices now, in early November. Your own record will be limited, but it gives you a useful reference point beyond a crossed-out price shown during Black Friday.

## Step 3: Compare the price delivered to your Eircode

The number worth comparing is the total you would pay to receive the item at your address. Enter your Eircode where requested and continue far enough through checkout to see delivery charges, without placing the order.

Check any address information filled in automatically. For a rural address, apartment or house with an awkward entrance, make sure the delivery details are complete and accurate. An Eircode helps identify the location, but it does not replace a useful address or any access instructions the courier may need.

**Hypothetical example:** one shop lists an appliance at €120 with €8 delivery. Another lists the identical model at €125 with delivery included. The second costs €3 less overall, assuming the contents, seller terms and other charges are equivalent.

Do not add unwanted products simply to reach a free-delivery threshold. Compare the cost of your intended basket with and without the extra item. Click and collect may also be worth checking, but factor in the journey and collection deadline.

## Step 4: Check where the seller and parcel are based

An Irish-looking website, euro prices or a familiar marketplace logo does not tell you everything about an order. Check who is selling the item, where it will be dispatched from and where returns must go.

For goods dispatched from within the EU to Ireland, customs charges generally are not part of the purchase. Goods dispatched from Great Britain can involve import VAT, customs duty where applicable, and handling charges. The treatment depends on the goods and how the seller arranges the sale; some sellers collect relevant charges at checkout.

Before comparing a UK seller with an Irish or EU alternative, look for a clear statement about whether the checkout total includes Irish VAT and any applicable import charges. If that is unclear, ask the retailer. Do not assume a euro price means everything has been covered, and do not guess a customs amount to complete your comparison.

Check product suitability too. For electrical goods, confirm the plug, specification and warranty arrangements for use in Ireland. A small price advantage is less useful if the product or after-sales support does not meet your needs.

## Step 5: Put returns and delivery timing beside the price

A purchase can look affordable until you need to send it back. Read the returns policy before Black Friday, especially for bulky items, clothing ordered in uncertain sizes and Christmas gifts.

Record the return destination, who pays return postage and any collection costs stated by the shop. Distinguish a voluntary change-of-mind policy from your statutory rights if goods are faulty. Many online purchases from professional traders carry a 14-day cancellation right, but exceptions apply; do not assume every product qualifies.

For Christmas presents, check whether any extended returns policy covers your order date and item. Do not assume a previous year’s policy will apply in 2026.

Delivery timing deserves the same attention. Note whether the shop gives an estimated dispatch date or an estimated arrival date. If an item is needed for a particular occasion, allow some breathing room rather than relying on the most optimistic estimate.

## Step 6: Set your buying rule before 27 November

For each shortlisted item, write one sentence describing when you would buy it: the exact product, your maximum delivered price and the conditions that matter. Those conditions might include a suitable returns policy or a delivery estimate that works for you.

When Black Friday 2026 arrives, compare the checkout total with that rule and your earlier price notes. Recheck the seller and specification, particularly if you follow a new link or switch marketplace listings. Use the [Ireland shopping homepage](/ie) as another starting point for your research, then verify the details with the retailer.

If the item meets your needs and budget, you have a reason to buy. If it does not, a countdown timer does not change the calculation. Waiting until Cyber Monday on 30 November is an option, not a promise of a better price or continued availability.

The aim is not to predict the cheapest moment perfectly. It is to reach Black Friday with fewer unknowns—and leave with purchases that still look sensible after delivery.
